While working as a temporary secretary, Tolins began writing "The Twilight of the Golds" on his lunch breaks, when, as he said, "no one cared who I was." Now, many are taking notice of the 26-year old Harvard graduate, not only as a talented playwright but also as a "theatrical prophet." The play look at the Golds, a tightknit, liberal Jewish lamily that resides in New York. Each stroke of the arum was cnoreographed tor aesthetic elegance and strength, giving the performance amazing dead-perfect unison. The Kodo drummers exhibited mastery of percussive theory, applying complicated syncopation, speed, gentleness, power, meter and endurance. They involved the crowd by getting the entire Koger Center to clap along as the band memoers ran mrougn aisies exciting the audience. Afterward, Kodo received three more standing ovations. The Kodo drummers, who are a magnificent ensemble, are sure to last in memory for a lifetime. They demonstrated that barriers of language and thousands of miles can be broken with the universal voice community that to its fullest. It's not really a calculated attempt to reach anyone in the audience." Tolins tries to write each character evenly so each is developed equally, homosexual or not. In reference to "Twilight," he said, "I tried to put a gay character on stage who is just a human being who is written as fully as the other characters on the stage, without making him a hero and the others villains. "I wanted to give the audience an emotional response. I want the audience for the two hours of the play to have a relationship with the gay man...and then examine their own attitudes." The powerful emotional issues "The Twilight of the Golds" confronts will provide fodder for debate long after it has left Austin.
