The 3-0 start is best since 1990, when the team opened the season with four victories. USC Coach Arlo Elkins improved his career record to 150-113 with the win team because of the number of matches, imecock "it was good for us though to get in betDavid ter physical shape," he said. The Gamecocks lost just one match in the three victories. Junior Victoria Davies, junior Heather Greene, freshman Muriel Abella and freshman Sophie Ljucovic won their first matches of the year. Senior Claire Hammond won her first two matches but lost Sunday to UNC's J.C. Biber 6-4, 6-2. In doubles action, the three USC teams were perfect. The No. 2 team of Abella and Ljucovic, who are both freshmen, lost just four games in three matches. Elkins said that the Gamecocks can expect a lot from Abella and Ljucovic. "They understand the game really well and can contribute right now," Elkins said. "They added a lot of stability to our lineup, and we win depend on tnem ngnt now." USC's No. 1 doubles team of Davies and Helen Crook, ranked 14th in the nation, made quick work of the teams from Davidson and Furman. However, UNC was more stubborn before losing to the British duo. Crook and Davies were down 7-8 and 0-30 in the 16th game before rallying to win the game and, eventually, the match. fhe <ju0 trailed 5-2 in the tie-breaker before finally putting the UNC team of Ariana Cervanka and Freddy Ulhlein. Crook and Davies improved their overall record to 19-3. Elkins spoke highly of the nationally ranked USC tandem. "I think they have more wins than any other doubles team in the nation," Elkins Elkins, in his 12th year as coach, also said it was a grueling weekend for his Monday, February 7, 1994 i 3 wins Crook, who was held out of her match against Davidson because of a bad back, is ranked 42nd in the nation in singles competition. Crook's absence gave Tracey Pulliam a chance to get some live action. Pulliam responded well in USC's No. 6 spin, winning nci inaicn o-i, /-? agonal Barbra Grooms. USC's victory over the Tar Heels Sunday was their first over UNC since 1990. Davies won her match in the No. 1 spot for USC against UNC's Nicole Transou 75, 1-6, 6-4. Crook, still hampered by a sore back, defeated Ariana Cervenka 7-5, 5-6, 6-1, improving her overall singles record to 12-5. Ljucovic defeated the Tar Heels' Alison Levy 6-0, 6-4. She currently leads the team with 13 singles victories. Abella, playing in the No. 4 spot, easily defeated UNC's Scotti Thomas 6-2, 6-2. Elkins said the win over UNC was an important one for USC. "That was a real good win for us," Elkins said. "We're off to our best start in three or four years. ? Elkins also commented on the Gamecocks' upcoming SEC season. "Florida, Georgia and Mississippi are probably the top three (teams), and after that, it's a real dogfight," Elkins said. "One thing about our team is we don't have one sure point (win). But all our players are really solid 1 think we can play with those top teams." Elkins attributed USC's fast start with tough play but also a little luck. "Last year we got ahead and lost a couple of times because of bad luck. So far this season everything is falling our way. US was limited to only seven players, but now has eight with the return of junior Heather Coburn to the squad following a back injury. Coburn has won more matches than any other USC player over the past two seasons. Even with the return of Coburn, depth remains a concern to Elkins. "A key to our season will be health," Elkins said. The Lady Gamecocks resume action Friday when Boston College comes to Columbia. USC then opens its SEC season against Arkansas Sunday morning and then finishes the weekend with a match against the College of Charleston Sunday afternoon. All matches will be at the Indoor Facility. ch re to Congratulate | few Initiates | Katherine Kellmeyer 1 Ashley McKenzie g .
