Friday, February 4, 1994 mm S U : ! jucl Give r By DONNA DELIA Staff Writer Smokers and non-smokers have waged war in restaurants, offices and courtrooms throughout the country for decades. After years of struggle and debate, has anything changed? Smoking has actually made a resurgence among certain groups. "Within the past seven years, teen-age girls have been found to smoke more," said LisaMohn, Health and Well ness programs' director-for the past six years. "However, statistics stil show that generally more mer smoke than women," Mohr said. "Thirty-one percent o males over 20 smoke, whereas 27 percent of females (ovei 20) smoke." Smoking also tends to de crease as the income and edu cation of a group increases "This is why less college stu dents are smokers," Mohi said. "It may sometimes appea that more students are smok ing now, but that's because it' more obvious when they're a! together in a group," she said "Peer group association has ; lot to do with whether or no people smoke." Theater junior Joanna Fari said she agreed smoking is social act. "1 only smoke whei I'm out drinking with othe friJ L ^ " ctio co</j "Itnus WI1U 5111UAV, JIIV. "It's a social thing." Two-year smoker Joann Bennett also started smokin because of the peer group sh associated with. "As a theate major, I was exposed to i more," Bennett said. "I used t hate it and I still think it's di: gusting and vile. But it help me calm down, especially b< fore I go on stage." Accounting major Sheil 1 Swanson is a non-smoker wh said she believes as long a " smokers are polite it doesn * bother her. "What annoys m H -4 l ^ m IB5I n You'l c ':%:?y :>:v A I M W VY77Y" Ill IfZK ne nicotine is when people smoke in the ^ ~ bathroom," Swanson said. "Don't they know what they're doing to themselves and to i other people?" David Mobley, a four-year smoker, said he started be cause it helped curb his appetite. "I'm polite when I smoke, which is more than 1 i can say for some of those non! smokers," he said. I Mohn said cigarettes can suppress the appetite in short : bursts. "Nicotine is a stimulant, but ' it also deadens the taste buds 1 and sense of smell, so food f isn't as appealing," Mohn said. Non-smoker Micah Casey r said she believes smoking is a IB drug worse then alcohol. "I hate it. Smoking should be abolished from the world," she Bennett said, "I'll quit at least by the time I decide to have kids. But I believe the cUmil/4 r-nr. Mohn said she believes the recent policy banning smoking a in buildings and the impendt ing tax hike will be the final motivation for many people to s quit. "The hard-line smokers a will put up with policies," 11 Mohn said. "It's amazing what (r * people will go through to smoke. But I also know how a hard it is to quit I'm an exg smoker." e "Although smoking has been Wk t attributed to 20 percent of it deaths in South Carolina in ? 1990, it is one of the hardest 5" habits to quit," Mohn said. IS "Cold turkey is probably the best method, but there are also alternatives, such as the a ' 0 nicotine patch and one-on-one LS counseling. These are more ef't fective with adjunct behavioral ie counseling."
