Five Points at a gk Local week COLUMBIA ? Music scenes are peculiar things. Suddenly, one city becomes a hotbed of local talent. Record companies begin eyeing that city's rock groups with dollar signs. In the early '80s, Athens was the hotbed, then Minneapolis, Boston and Austin. Los Angeles was the Mecca of uit luui-iuaMiig liituu guu IUI uit last part of the decade. The Seattle scene came about five years ago and wiped out all perceptions of what it took to become a coliseumlevel act. Since then, everyone has been looking around for the next big scene. Columbia has the potential to become a carefully watched scene in the coming months. With the explosion of Hootie and the Blowfish as one of the South's best-drawing regional acts and their subsequent signing to Atlantic, a lot of attention is being drawn to a city that too many people dismissed as second rate for far too long. Lay Quiet Awhile released their debut CD on Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls' Daemon Records label. Alternative metal monsters Isabelle's Gift became the first signee to local label Pendragon Records, and their debut "Freakmaker" has been selling consistently throughout the state. My prediction is that in the coming months we see releases by K?p ir 5 f% Ht J y A For all conl Morning A Complete C Pregnancy' Abortion S< P Planned 256-4 Off Forest Drive, 1/2 mile fr Saturday, Lunchtime & E1 I Do] aN And with c Recorder: YOUR CHOICI 41 TCM-S63 Pressr Cassette Recorc One touch recording Built in microphone 1048.7.93 ? Most of the best live rock 'n' roll is happening at Rockefellas', which clearly attacks all segments of the .market by promoting shows of all genres, from college rock to punk to folk acoustic to speed metal. Friday nights are the undeclared college night with fantastic acts such as Jupiter Coyote, The Blue Dogs, Uncle Mingo, Doolittle and Edwin McCain scheduled in the coming months. Nationals coming to Rockefellas' include Atlantic recording artists Screaming Cheetah Wheelies (Feb. 13), Epic recording artists Bad Brains (Feb. 15), RCA recording artists The Dave Matthews Band (Feb. 16) and Dr. Dream recording artists Dash Rip Rock (Feb. 26). Acts such as The Root Doctors, Casual Insanity and Water (formerly the Groovy Cools) have been increasing their popularity exponentially by playing Pugs. At both Pugs and Rockefellas', you have to be 18 to see live music. The Asylum, although a 21-andover club, has been putting on shows Fridays and Saturdays. Focusing primarily on heavy alternative acts, the Asylum has been building up its clientele. This week in Five Points: Wednesday: Rockefellas': Craven Melon with Bus Stop. Best described as Hootie meets Jupiter Coyote. Members of Craven Melon come from The Next Move and Dog House. Pugs: The Stereotypes/Presidents/Stranger Flowers will play progressive/mainstream covers from the '80s and '90s. Thursday: Rockefellas': Isabelle's Gift with Muthafist and Sampain Society. Isabelle's Gift is Columbia's heaviest band. Muthafist gets the same credit in Charleston and sells out Cafe 99. Pugs: "Big Thursday." 25-cent draft. Saturday: Rockafellas': The show of the week. God's Comics with Casual Insanity. God's Comics is a local favorite playing hard-edged "super pop." God's Comics gained some notoriety by doing openers for Hootie. Now, they are on track to be one of the next S.C. -acts to be signed. Their CD will be out in late spring. Casual Insanity plays Athensstyle jam rock with Southern rock influences. Casual's trademark is ? their percussion, which rivals that of Santana's. What Casual really needs to do is headline a Friday so everyone can get a chance to see a full show. Casual's CD is on sale at Tracks, Peaches and Manifest.
