Campion fine Stephen Brown LIGHTS, CAMERA, REACTION As her pale hands caress the cold ivory keys, an inner fire begins to ignite. An untapped passion, an unsneakahle excitement for life is waiting deep beneath the surface to bring a moment of joy to her crumbling world. Masterfully played by Holly Hunter, Ada is the main character of Jane Campion's exhilarating film 'The Piano." Ada is mute, has ghost-like white skin, speaks only through sign language to her daughter Flora and expresses herself only through the sounds of her beloved piano. Ada's silence is evocative of classic film stars; she's mysterious and reclusive, but she's driven and determined. Expertly acted by Hunter, Ada becomes a symbol of tainted purity, death of the human soul and life born anew during the course of the story. It's hard to believe the spunky-sounding actress from "Raising Arizona," "Broadcast News" and this year's "The Firm" can exercise such restraint as she slowly reveals the inner workings of her character. Miserable in her new marriage and hungry for her piano, she agrees. But the supposed lessons become more intense than she once thought. Baines is infatuated with Ada's enigmatic beauty and wants sexual favors from her. Although his proposal is initially exploitative, Baines is-simply a lonely, confused romantic who wants a relationship for the first time. Ada grows to love him, and the two have never been so happy. Needless to say, Stewart is dismayed to discover his wife's infidelity, and the brutality of his character begins to show. The horrors of his vengeance cut completely into Ada's character. For Ada, her love for the piano has become secondary to her love for Baines, but twists of fate reminiscent of the best work of Shakespeare block her hope and happiness. One sequence, in which her daughter Flora, clad in angel wings for a church pageant, delivers a message to the wrong man at the wrong time atop a jagged hill, possesses extraordinary imagery. Impressive also are the two male performances in the film. Keitel, known for playing Scorsese-styled thugs and criminals, displays a real talent as an unlikely leading man. Neill, the gentle dinosaur digger from a particular summer box office hit, shows a cruel and unfeeling side not at all expected. "The Piano" is a spiritual experience, filmed in muted, natural colors and edited to perfection. The knee-deep mud, barren trees and fierce ocean tide constitute the sharp, angular landscape on which the human heart is challenged to its limit. The gorgeous scenery is coupled with the haunting piano music, which adds a harrowing core to this story of desperate souls. Using soft light to deliberately disorient the audience at first, Campion films sequences with more clarity and more harsh realism as the film progresses. An opening moment seen through the eyes of Ada's hand-covered face chops the image she sees; and later, the trees segment our view of life in a similar way. By employing these techniques, Campion leads us through the story without spoonfeeding us the film's hidden mysteries. Certainly one of the year's best films, "The Piano" is a finely tuned masterpiece of moviemaking.
