USC ? While most students were busy
opening Christmas presents, the women r
Gamecocks were busy honing their basket- 1
ball skills against such teams as Aubucn.
Kentucky and Ole Miss. In eight games {
Juring the break, the women won six.
The ladies faced off against Georgia (
State Dec. 29 in the Coastal Carolina s
Invitational. Despite the fact that it was c
:heir first match since Dec. 8,'the j
Gamecocks came out sharp and downed the
Panthers 79-47. Christy Timmons led the ~
earn with 12 points and five rebounds. jShannon
Johnson, Nicki Bass, Cindy Kelly
ind Melinda McDaniel also scored in double
figures. ' s
In die tournament's championship match, 1
he women squared off against Austin Peay
Jniversity. Undaunted by their second a
:ame after a long layoff, the ladies dumped F
he Governors 90-51. Johnson bounced
>ack from a relatively poor performance P
igainst Georgia State to score 27 points and u
lish out eight assists. Kelly and Jenny C
Randall contributed 12 and 17 points s
espectively to the effort. F
The Gamecocks returned to Columbia F
ind the friendly confines of the Coliseum j
or their third home contest of die season. n
\fter earlier defeating Georgia Southern n
ind S.C. State, the ladies hoped to extend
heir home winning streak against the
College of Charleston.
Bass hit two three-pointers before the j
;ame was a minute old, and the Cougars
lever recovered. The Gamecocks went on
o cruise to a 106-72 victory. The win
narked the first time USC reached the cen- *
ury mark since 1989 as six Gamecocks v
cored in double figures. ^
Despite the team's offensive perfor- 6
nance, coach Nancy Wilson opened the ^
>ostgame press conference by commenting p
>n her team's play at the other end of the g
ourt.
"I thought we did an extremely good job p
lefensively," Wilson said. c
Next, the Gamecocks traveled to take on c
onference foe Auburn. Before the game, 7
Vilson and her players were in agreement p
hat the key for USC would be how the p
earn shot three-pointers against the zone
lefense of the Tigers.
Despite poor shooting by both teams, 12
>f the 19 shots that the Gamecocks convertd
from the floor were for three as Uiey
lowned the Tigers 64-55. Auburn tied the 0
core at 53 with under six minutes remain- P
ng but could only manage two points the
est of the way. '
The next match for the Gamecocks was h
ah. 8 against Kentucky. Better known for T
heir men's program, the ladies from A
Centucky dominated every aspect of the u
;ame and downed USC 82-63.

natch, and that proved to be USC's only
ead of the night. USC was led by
rimmons, who had 18 points and eight
ebounds. Afterward. Wilson said her team
acked consistency.
"We were pretty inconsistent across the
>oard," Wilson said.
The final home game of the break for die
jamecocks was against Ole Miss. Once
tgain, the ladies gave a game effort but

jamecock to score in double figures.
Starting point guard Natalie Funderburk
aid despite the margin, the team wasn't far
rom heading back to victory lane.
"We just need a few things to happen,
nd then we can start rolling again,"
underburk said.
Just as USC had been dominated in its
irevious two games, the Gamecocks trimphed
against the Western Carolina
Catamounts 114-56. Six USC players cored
in double figures, Johnson and
landall leading the with 20 points apiece,
lelly contributed a career high 16 points,
ohnson, who had 12 assists, narrowly
lissed the triple-double with seven
abounds.
The 116 points were the second most in
chool history. T he USC record is held by
le 1979 team, which defeated Wheeling
37-34.
The last game during the break for the
lamecocks was against the LSU Fighting
igers. The Tigers led by 15 at the half and
/ere up by 10 with 13:51 left. The
lamecocks went on a 16-2 mark and led
3-59 3:51 later. USC was sparked by the
econd-half play of Johnson, who scored 31
oints in the second period and finished the
ame with 38 points.
According to coach Wilson, Timmons
layed a big part in the victory. The coach
redited Timmons' defense with stopping
!omelia Gayden, the leading scorer for the
igers. Bass was the only Gamecock other
tan Johnson to score in double figures. She
nished the game with 11 points.
Johnson's tally of 38 points was the most
ince Sharon Gilmore scored 40 points
gainst Florida International in 1983. The
8 points also tie Johnson for fourth place
n the all-lime Gamecock list for most
oints in a game.
USC is 3-2 in the SEC and 1Q-5 overall,
he Gamecocks are chomping at the bit
oping to get back into the NCAA
ournainent after a two-year absence,
iccording to Bass, how far the team goes is
p to the players.
"We can go as far as we want to," the
mior guard said.
