| USC ? More than 20 years after the surgeon
general's landmark announcement that
cigarettes are bad for you, young people
today are still smoking as often as their
parent's generation and for thr camp rea
sons.
To counter the bad publicity that tobacco
has gotten in recent years, the major companies
began an aggressive advertising and
promotional campaign to woo smokers.
Instead of cancer, smokers are reminded of
camels.
R.J. Reynold's Joe Camel campaign has
brought the brand back to the top and also

may not be spelled out in the job description
of a resident adviser, but for some RAs, v
it might as well be.
"I walked down the hall for maybe two
minutes," former Laborde RA Stan
Richister said. "When I came back, they c
had totally toilet-papered my room."
Other residents prefer to restrict their ^
trickery to the traditional joke-playing holiday.

"Last year, I had three residents tell me
they had a rat in their room," Sims RA Lisa 0
McCall said. "So, here I am on the floor ^
with cigarette butts and potato skins, really 0
nasty, grungy stuff. Then, they all said,
'April Fools!'" s
For other practical jokers, redecoration is p
the key to having a little fun with the RA.
"I had a resident get into my room and
rearrange all my furniture and posters," s

Like many recipients of practical jokes, d
Gersh could not resist the challenge to retaliate.

Other victims of fun and games prefer a

In response to Camel's success, Marlboro
as instituted a similar promotion where you
ollect Marlboro Miles, which can be
edeemed for prizes. This program has the
ame effect as Camel's: It increases the likeihood
that smokers will continue to smoke.
"My roommate Russ and I are saving up
ur miles for a kayak," junior Ed Scofield
