You a will not have to sit through a 1 boring football game matching f the unpopular Fighting Irish of a Notre Dame, ranked No.'2 in the 11 nation, against a disappointing a top-ranked Florida State squad. If n you are unable tb get a ticket to h USC's next home game (scalp ii value: S10), you can view the f exciting duel between the 9-L Florida Gators and the 4-5 c Gamecocks on WIS-TV. S There is something weird but c familiar going on here. Local ft affiliates of the major networks n choose to show what they think s> Columbians want to see instead c ui uiv^ iiauwum ^luginiiuiung JJIU* J vided by NBC and CBS. In addi- t< tion to CBS affiliate WLTX airing "Sanford and Son" at 11:30 v p.m. while David Letterman f, brings laughter to more civilized 5 areas of the country, there have (( been other programming ploys g that have left sports fans scratch- n ing their heads and searching for sports bars. WLTX insists on showing the Washington Redskins almost every week, often in place of a f national game. I understand that . South Carolinians unfortunately ? lie in the Redskins and Falcons n region, so we will usually see ir these teams. However, when ? there is a big game CBS pro- 1 motes all week through those "I'm a Big Fan" ads, people n< expect to see that game and can ^ be disappointed when the local ^ station shows the Skins or, as a' was the case once in 1992, car 01 racing. 1S Similarly, WIS consistently ^ runs Jefferson Pilot SEC Games 'r of the Week in place of the Notre Dame game. NBC paid ol millions of dollars for the right fr to broadcast all seven of the ol Irish's home games, but the local affiliate first broadcasts the SEC ii contest in its entirety before cut- D ting to the national feed in the G third quarter, as it will Saturday. d( t have what j umaic. . . we he 8Push Bulthoie I |wTT?T^fpj|Wf| JUUJBiUUBrtaiiU ,:anC . The station may lot choose to take a weekend off md show a more attractive lational game. The station is lappy with its obligation, claimtig to be the "hometown station or USG athletics." USC and Columbia have hanged during 40 years. Itudents come from all over the ountry and bring with them dif^rent tastes. National broadcasts lake everyone happy; there is omething for all. Chicago fans an watch the Bears one week, nH Ca/tla 1111 Lxiglt IU11S Idll WdlCll U1C11 jam the next week. Showing a good mix of games /ould not just please students om other regions of the country ut would introduce fans to other iams. Most important, the ames NBC and CBS show ationally are often the best latchups. But too often, fans cannot /atch them. The Irish-Seminole ame is believed to be the iggest game of the year in col;ge football, but because it is ot the biggest game of the week i SEC college football, you may nly watch part of the second alf. I am not saying you should Dt watch the Gamecocks. Heck, ley need our support now more lan ever. But you should be )le to have a choice. The policy f WLTX and WIS seems one of olationism and backwardness, recalls the stubbornness leadig to the Civil War, only they're jmanding stations rights instead f states rights and are seceding om the major networks instead r the Union. WIS should talk Jefferson Pilot no letting it show the Notre ame game instead of the amecocks. Some situations nnand understanding. ou want in '11 flet it.
