The game featured a matchup of the nation's top offensive powerhouse in Clemson and USC's stingy marking defense. USC and Clemson entered the match ranked No. 13 and No. 3 respectively by Soccer America magazine. All 120 minutes of the match lived up to their advanced billing. The Gamecock offense Dressured the Tiger defense and dominated the game at midfield, while Clemson was at its most dangerous on the counterattack. Time and time again, the Gamecock defense, led by Pete Duitsman and Helgi Bjorgvinsson, turned away a fierce rush by the speedy Tiger offense. Throughout the match, Clemson attackers Jimmy Glenn and Wolde Harris turned a determined Gamecock attack around and sped the other way. Despite the nearly continual pressure by both sides, Clemson scored the first goal on a freak deflection off Bjorgvinsson. Glenn crossed the ball from the left edge of the penalty area in the direction of a streaking attacker. However, the ball deflected off Bjorgvinsson's hip past Gamecock goalkeeper David Turner at 25:58. At 28:40, Matt Haiduk took the ball at midfield and centered it to Rob Smith 30 yards out from goal. Smith nassed the hall fn Faklark who had snuck in behind the Tiger defense. Faklaris beat a charging Jefferson Pilot to From Staff Reports USC ?
