Savege, who has been swimming and running for 10 years, is from Vancouver, British Columbia. This year, she has a swimming scholarship, and in 1992, she had a running scholarship. While Savege was being recruited, swimming coach Kelly Parker-Medlin thought it would be beneficial for Jeff Small, the track and cross country running coach, and her to alternate offering scholarships for the four years Savege would be at USC. This way, each coach has an extra scholarship every other year, and Savege can show her talents for two teams. Savege started at the bottom of the pool. She couldn't pass a lifeguard test when she was 9. Savege's mom enrolled her in the local swim club so she could learn how to swim.
