Some of the early games such as Notre Dame at Michigan will test how well the teams have prepared during the off-season. Notre Dame will play at Michigan Sept. 11. Oct. 2 will feature two outstanding games, - Miami at Florida State and Notre Dame at Stanford. On Nov. 20, Ohio State plays at Michigan and USC plays at home against Clemson. Notre Dame enters the season ranked No. 7, and Michigan begins the season ranked No. 3. Coach Lou Holtz of Notre Dame will be relying on either Paul Failla or Kevin McDougal to fill the void left by the graduation of Rick Mirer. Whoever wins the starting job will be tested early by a stubborn Michigan defense that was one of the toughest in the country in 1992. Heisman trophy candidate Tyrone Wheatley will be the focus of Michigan's offense, which High Quality M Produce I See Us For All Of 10% OFF All Purcha Hb Y* ^ IS kS k IbVbj I ii mm u r 8 Restaurante Mex x 1 99 Knox Abbott C p (Just Across Blossom St. Bridge 5 794-3974 p Hours P Monday?Thursday: p 11 am-2:30pm, 5pm-10:3 0 Friday: 11 am-2:30pm, 5pm Q Saturday: 1 2pm-11 pn 5 Sunday: 1 2pm-10pm q Happy Hour p Mon.?Tnur. 5pm-7pr p Sat.?Sun. 5pm-7pm U I WIO A I 0 ! ] All ABC Regnlatiohs Enfc | j $3oo OFF Dinner X j Choose From 30 Comt 0 . Oct. 2 will feature two of the top games of the year. One of these games will be an intrastate rivalry when No. 4 Miami will play at No. 1 Florida State. This game has traditionally brought out the best in both teams. If Florida State is still No. 1, this game will prove to be even more exciting for the fans. As with Michigan, Florida State has a Heisman trophy candidate in quarterback Charlie Ward. If the game comes down to the final seconds and Florida State is trailing, Coach Bobby Bowden will turn to freshman Scott Bentley, the nation's top kicking recruit to win the game. Miami will rely on a new starting quarterback, Frank Costa, who takes over for Gino Torretta. If, as in the past, Miami's repeated first year quarterback success can carry the team, Miami might be looking at an upset that will turn both teams' seasons around. The other big game on Oct. 2 has Notre Dame traveling to Stanford. Stanford's defense might be the key to this game because the team lost most of the players from a defense that was one of the nation's best in 1992. However, Coach Bill Walsh has built a team by recruiting some of the top high school players in the country. Also, Walsh thrives on play VJ IVWV^JL. Notre Dame will be playing to avenge, 1992's loss at home to the Cardinals. Nov. 20 features two games that are also staples of college football. The first of these games showcases Ohio State visiting Michigan. As usual, the Buckeyes will rely on the quarterback position. Junior Bob Hoying takes the snaps for the Scarlet and Gray this year. If he can move the offense, the defense should shoulder its responsibilities. If Michigan gets by Notre Dame, the Wolverines could enter this game undefeated with roses in their eyes. However, the Buckeyes will be looking to end a long drought against Michigan. Also on Nov. 20, USC will play at Clemson. 1992 was the first time USC defeated its arch rivals since 1987. Clemson looks to rebound from its first losing season since 1976, and USC aims for its first bowl game in four years. However, records can be thrown out the window when these two teams face each other for bragging rights of the state. All of the games previewed here will provide hours of excitement. Most of these games will likely be the deciding factor to each team's success. While there will be many exciting games this season, these five should lead the way.
