Japanese animation, also known
as Japanimation or "Anime" (pronounced
a-nih-may), is becoming
one of the more popular products
to be shipped from the Orient.
Some of the shows vou watched
as a kid might have been early Anime,
such as "Voltron," "G-Force:
Battle of the Planets," and "Starblazers."
The modern Japanimation
titles offer superior animation,
intense storylines and blazing
action.
But the main obstacle to enjoying
Anime is the language barrier.
While one can enjoy the artwork
and action, the language prevents

During USC's Summer Reperatory
Program, "The Prime of Miss
Jean Brodie" premiered at the
Drayton Hall Theatre from July 2131,
illuminating the scenes.
That's right. If you missed Jay
Presson Allen's beautiful dramatization
of the incisive novel about a
little love and betrayal, by Muriel
Spark, you missed a real treat!
Lisa Norman of Tennessee, who
may be recognized as a character
from the TV show Matlock, starred
as Miss Jean Brodie. Norman, who

However, hope exists. Some
American companies are selling
Anime with English subtitles or
American voice-overs.
Many of the following titles are
available in video shops like Suncoast
Video or are available by
mail-order:
"Bubblegum Crisis/Bubblegum
Crash" ? This cyberpunk series is
packed with music, action, armored
battlesuits and beautiful women
with big guns. These lovely and
dangerous "Knight Sabers" fight
crime in a grim, gritty future.
Music videos also go along with
the series.
"Akira" ? In Japan's near
future, a nuclear bomb devastates
half of Tokyo...or was it a bomb?

Actors Equity Association, has a
grand reputation with USC's Summer
Rep Program.
The more memorable part of the
young girl's school life was Miss
Brodie's "prime." Miss Brodie, a
petite and eloquent teacher who
remained, as she would constantly
say, in her "prime," dominated by
the lives and minds of her students
and others around her.
Like many, Miss Brodie's downfall
came as a result of her tangled
relationships that went sour, failure
to accept the consequences of
responsibility, and her "prime."

Forget everything you think you
know about vampires. A young girl
returns stray demons to "The Dark"
using deadly powers and her faithful
servant, Lava. Her mysterious
past is revealed and what little you
know about vampires will shock
you.
"Dominion" ? In the future the
air is contaminated by bacteria, a
crime happens every 35 seconds.
It's up to the glorious Tank Police
to make sure that changes to every
36 seconds. The fight between the
bumbling Tank Police and the mas odie'

Steve Harley played Teddy
Lloyd, who is desperately in love
with Miss Brodie, and Gordon
Lowrther, played by Jerry Miller,
whom Miss Brodie toyed with for
revenge, are pertinent in her downfall
that the young girl now vividly
recalls.
Janie Haddad, Miss Brodie's
confidant and later assasain, Sherrill
Turner, Julie Brundage, and
Dorthy Dillnghan, who ran off to
become a hero with her her brother
in Spain (at Miss Brodie's behest)
were called "Miss Brodie's girls,"
whom she took pride in rearing and
caring for, probably because she

The planet is ravaged by nuclear

Almost all the girls respected
Miss Brodie, despite her wrinkled
life, but one in particular played the
domineering role that betrayed
Miss Brodie in one of her soured
relationships.
Directed by Robert Jennings,
"The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,"
rounded up the University Summer
Rep Program. The play was very
touching, emotional, enlightening
and humorous. Allen did an outstanding
job with this dramatization,
making it all the more reason
to end up the season.

These are titles that are most
widely accessible. However, fans
and pirate companies offer a wider
selection for half the price. You
can find titles such as "Ranma
1/2," "Baoh," "Gunnm," and Outlanders
from mail-order companies
or animation clubs. The best solution
is to ask some of your friends
if they know someone who watches
Japanimation and they can give out
contacts for ordering.
