[W V\JL Singleton's 'Jus By DEREK McKISSOCK Staff Writer John Singleton's new film "Poetic Justice," tells the refreshing tale of a boy and girl who leam tc love and respect one another despit* the negative influence of living ii the war-zone atmosphere of Soutl Central Los Angeles. The "Boyz N the Hood" direc tor/writer's second feature is alst more than just a love story. We ar< shown that life is a fragile commod ity. The struggle to survive embit ters people and forces them to ac tougher than they really are. Oni character of the film typifies thi mindset when she says, "Thi world's just a place to go out an< f?k up in." Singleton, however, has his tw< main characters take a chance, ; chance on each other. For if there i no hope, Singleton suggests, thei there is nothing. Janet Jackson as the poet/hair dresser, Justice, and Tupac Shaku as the postman/would-be-rapper Lucky, play a couple with deep psy chological scars inflicted by thei surroundings. Justice tries to deal with the dou ble blow of an alcoholic mothe who committed suicide and a love who was murdered in her arms. Fo Lucky, the problem is raising ; Live in Tov\ Shandon... So when the sex goes, r the couple is finished, r Maya Angelou, who wrote the r poetry for the film, has a cameo role a as a figure of moral conscience.
