AIDS Early-age AIDS ea to avoid spread of Her son, Ryan White, was di; disease was still relatively ui AIDS education policies in An istent. Now, three years after Ryan ing around the country, speaki ences, especially teenage ones. And*Mt)riday night, she paj USC, where she called for A grade. During last year's president cation took a far back seat to health care. And it hasn't beei administration's first two mont But as the administration is and events, from the Russian AIDS continues to claim more is the frightening reality. Of course, our suggestion t< federal funding for medical re nal, but it's just the best solutic The key element of increa money to elementary schools White suggested. The younge consequences, the better. It is imperative that AIDS e become sexually active, and. school is too late. Throwing money at the prol has proven to be an effective problem, and money well sp< definitely worth it. Most people know of somt who has either AIDS or the I people know someone who has TTiis will continue to be th found. But, until then, we can the power of AIDS, and educal Compromi in churchDuring the past couple < , weeks, ,{'ve been reading varioi letters in The State concernir whether prayer, Bible study ar other Christian traditions belor in our public schools. Natural! most of the letters support puttir these values into the publi school system here in the meti area, especially since we are i the deep part of the "Bible Belt.1 Indeed, this is a most intrigi ing issue to me and even a somi u/hi?t nmncino fine rnncirlpriri " VV"U1WV' some of the arguments these pet pie have used. In respect to the* people and to the supporters < the issue's other side, however, realize this is a very touchy issu Although I do not feel churc and state should be intertwinei unlike many Christians, I fei that I possess some helpful su< gestions that may be able to sati fy both sides of this issue. First, let me touch on a coup of inaccuracies made by son Christians that I feel are a nece sity for my argument. One argument I've read in tl papers and heard from talking some Christians on campus that this country was founded c Christianity and, thus, we shou have Christian teachings in 01 school systems. Actually, our great counti was founded on religious fre< dom and our carefully construe ed Constitution clearly says tl United States will have no estal lished church or religion, eve though Christianity does seem i be the dominant religion in eoi temporary America. Another argument I've heai from Christian*; is thpir rnnrei for our society's moral value This strikes me as kind of amu: ing, especially coming from fui damentalists. Although mor; values are important, these pec pie act as if Christians are tf only moral people around, meai ing only Christian values shoul be taught. That's very offensiv to other people, plus myself. I'\ known many non-Christians froi other religions or no particul; faith who have excellent mor; values. My suggestions for this matte are, in truth, a bit simplistic, but believe they are satisfying an quite effective. First, rather than having praye A lucation necessary deadly disease agnosed with AIDS in 1984 when the iknown to most Americans and the aerica's schools were virtually nonexi's death, Jeanne White is still traveling about the deadly disease to audirticipated in an AIDS forum held at JDS education to begin in the fifth lal campaign, the issue of AIDS eduthe economy, the federal deficit and n a top priority so far in the Clinton hs. ; distracted by so many other issues crisis to our own economic woes, and more Americans every day. This 3 help fight the AIDS crisis is more search and education. It's not origi>n. sed funding, though, is to give the ; rather than secondary schools, as r students learn about AIDS and its ducation reaches children before they for many, middle school and high 3lem is not the answer, but education tool in making people aware of the snt on early-age AIDS education is ;body, probably a relative or friend, -IIV virus. And, unfortunately, many tt ; died from it. e case until a cure to the disease is lo i only hope to keep people aware of To [ion is the best way to do that. we ise necessary 5 state issues on ^ \ ^ j A Y ^ I' T I L L E Y up.' ^ h?is in school or before football froi > games, why not have a moment 6-1 5e of silence? This way people who on: want to pray can do so at their Cai 1 discretion and those who don't S0I1 e- care can do whatever they please. 9.1 ^ Organized prayer outside of Fos d. u :? ?: 1.. ??-r - ^ C11U1C11 IS Slliipiy U11C11MVC IU 5te 21 those of other religions, especial- off* ly to atheists. Em s" Secondly, if there is to be ani Bible study in our public schools, Gai 'e then I believe we should have the ie study of all Bible interpretations, inh s" including both Protestant and gra Catholic, along with other ancient ici? ie scriptures, such as the Koran. f0c [? Again, this is being fair to all stei 1S religions. This should also be an Mc )n elective so as not to offend athe- Di) lcl ists. fro J1 In addition, this would enlight- bac en students and help them to ath y understand other interpretations of the divine, which, in turn, l" would help them to better underie stand other people and their cul> tures. ;n Also, rather than teach about 10 just the religion of Christianity, I 1" feel students should be offered religion classes similar to ones \ ^ offered here at USC. E, The point here is respect, A S- understanding and enlightenment. V s" I realize the importance of having C one's children learn their fami- N ^ ly's respective faith, but that is A the iob of churches and nrivate Ie schools. As Americans, we are called the melting pot of the * world, but to say dial Christianity [>( e is our state religion would be a A e total misunderstanding. q 111 Clearly, that's not what great A men such as Thomas Jefferson C, and the other framers of the G Constitution intended, so we have St separation of church and state. And let's keep it that way. ^ id Ai Fr Jay Tilley is a columnist c "r for The Gamecock. D /iewp 407. The Grape Juice Channel 408. The Patty Duke Channel 409.
