Steve Newton's reign as head
coach of the USC's men's basketball
team came to a disappointing
end this past weekend at the SEC
Tournament as Alabama beat the
Gamecocks, 86-70. Newton's twoyear
record at USC was 20-35.
The team ended the 1992-93 season
just like they finished the year
before's campaign under Steve
Newton. In the '91-'92 year, the
Gamecocks could only win three of
their last 18 g;unes. One year later,
history repeated itself as the team
lost their last seven games and ten
of their last eleven.

ing note
The consistent play of center
Chris Leso will be missed. Leso has
appeared in every game in his lour
years at LJSC, tying a school record
for consecutive games played at 115
set by Brad Jergensen in die early
1980s.
The Gamecocks will also be losing
the physical inside nlav of
w - I J
Edmund Wilson. His shot-blocking
was a big plus for USC this year.
He finished sixth in die conference
vviili 1.3 blocks a game.
flic next coach of USC, whether
or not it be Bobby Cremins, will
certainly have his hands full in trying
to restore USC to its glory days
of Frank McGuire and Alex
English.
