Vote Students must participate election to improve university's future It's almost over. This year's student government campaign will culminate Thursday in the annual election of executive officers and senators. Even though the races for president and treasurer will probably not be decided until next week's run-off election, a large chunk of student government, including the entire senate and its president, will be chosen this week. This year's campaign, with its negative politicking, numerous election infractions and overall nastiness, has probably turned off much of the student body. However, it is imperative the student body votes. Last year's election saw over 2,500 students vote, a marked achievement at I JSC! Rut it's nathetic when student leaders nraise the student body because 10 percent of 26,000 people had the initiative to fill out a ballot. It's been said that all the candidates represent more of the same. That is not necessarily true. There IS a choice, and the students should take advantage of it. Don't cop out and not vote because of the "no choice" excuse. It doesn't wash. But do not vote for just anybody. Choose those who will truly serve the University of South Carolina and not themselves. Candidates who are running more for their resume and future seats in the Statehouse should be denied. There are a lot of opportunists out there, so choose wisely. And candidates who concentrate on non-issues, rather than important ones such as the budget, tuition increases, race relations and safety, should also be rejected. There are more critical issues than homecoming or the Golden Spur. The student elections should not be partisan, but certain campus elements are trying to force students to choose candidates because of their perceived connections to the Republican or Democratic parties, a naicuious iaea. Partisan politics does not belong in student elections, period. The 1992 campaign is over. Clinton and Hollings won. Bush and Hartnett lost. Wait until the '94 governor's race for good old-fashioned partisanship. These people who insist on voting along party lines obviously do not have USC's best interests at heart. This goes for both executive officers and senators. And when voting for senators, only circle the people you want. If that happens to be three candidates for eight seats, so be it. Voting for people you don't know only hurts the candidates you do know. The campaign has been ridiculed for the past two weeks, but the results of the student election are important. If anything, SGA controls student activities fees and is the only organized representation of the students in dealing with the administration, city and state. ". With this in mind, vote. And vote wisely. There is a choice, and your vote does count. Grow up! If those swimmers had any self discipline they would not have even toyed with the idea of bombing anything. How can vandalism, a close second to terrorism, be considered a mere prank? Tell that to Russ Brown. He lost $800 in business because of their childish prank. In this economy, that is serious money. Never mind the fact that they were just plain lucky someone wasn't hurt. I am also saddened that the dedicated swimmers on the team are suffering because of their teammates' poor judgment. I support the USC swim team 100 percent. I am proud to say that my brother swam for USC. The team members not involved in the bombings shouldn't have to suffer, but the innocent often suffer with the guilty in this world. That is another thing those boys should have thought of before going off halfcocked. They should be kicked off the team for good. I, however, do not see the need to expel them unless this behavior continues. I can see why people want them expelled, but I think this university has been around long enough and has suffered worse scandal than this. Why deprive those boys of a chance to become more educated. Self-respect is what they lack. If they are willing, this university can help them find it within themselves.
