Jackson threatens
hunger strike
WASHINGTON ? The Rev.
Jesse Jackson threatened Monday
to organize a hunger strike in the
United States unless the Clinton
administration allows HIVinfected
Haitians into this country.
The Greenville native, who
began a personal hunger strike
Sunday, emerged from a meeting
with White House Chief of Staff
Mack McLarty saying he supported
Clinton's Haitian policy.
but he wants action within a
week.
He also met with Hillary
Clinton and discussed his views
on the nation's health care system
? the focus of Mrs.
Clinton's work in the west wing
of the White House. Jackson
came away impressed.
"It was a very good meeting,
in my judgment. She is sensitive
to a broad range of concerns," he
said.

Tobacco tax hike
talks create conflict
COLUMBIA ? Tobacco growers
say they will fight any
attempt to increase the state's 7cents-a-pack
cigarette tax and
that Rep. Marion Carnell is
bluffing if he expects otherwise.
"We would be against any tax
whatsoever," said George
Abbott, a Darlington County
grower, warehouseman and president
of the South Carolina
Tobacco Political Action
Committee.
Carnell, D-Ware Shoals, said
recently that he planned to meet
with tobacco representatives this
week about a tax increase. He
said that while the state needs a
5-cents-a-pack increase, he
understands the industry has
been thinking about a 3-cents-apack
increase.
"I'm not aware of any meeting,
and I'm not aware of any
compromise," said Tom Smith, a
Pamplico attorney and a South
Carolina tobacco lobbyist.
