Gamec By MARK NEWGENT and ROB RODUSKY Staff Writers Time stopped for about 40 seconds Saturday night at the Carolina Coliseum. Despite junior Waide Franklin's team-high 20 points and Clemson's Sharone Wright, Wayne Buckingham and Chris Whitney all fouling out, the Gamecocks lost in overtime 89-84 at Frank McGuire Arpnn The loss dropped the Gamecocks to 8-11 this season. South Carolina played a sloppy first half, scoring only 26 points and committing 10 turnovers. Clemson had 12 turnovers, but made up for them by shooting 50 percent from three-point land. Clemson owned the inside during the first half, out-rebounding South Carolina 23-16. South Carolina's inside offense was neutralized, and the Gamecocks could not make up for the inside game with perimeter shooting. South Carolina shot a meager nine of 27 from the floor. In the second half, it looked as if Clemson was going to make this game a rout. The Tigers opened up a 19-point lead by going up 49-30 ^ i^neaney, Normally, we would begin with our favorite pastime, which is, of course, Tar heel Bashing! But NANCY since they looked SALOMONS! oh so impressive against hapless TONY SANT N.C. State (notice the dripping sarcasm), we decided to give it a rest this week. Just this week! We feel compelled to begin by talking about the No. 1 Hoosiers from Indiana. IU continued their winning ways with a 73-66 victory in Iowa City over the No. 8 Hawkeyes. The only real concern for Indiana now is to make certain they do not "peak" too early. Remember, it IS only one month until March Madness begins. Kentucky looked very impressive in their 82-67 revenge win against Vanderbilt. They are clearly No. 2 for now. Now we would like to switch gears for a moment and talk about who some of our favorite players have been to watch this year. These are the players who make us act like Dick Vitale when they do something spectacular. \rjnf j Thought * i El Let us offer you Applications now available t< Apply now for the following / /1 < 4-1 /-?<" ivi/'III/ # -MMWW tunwn : duties include c : duties include bala Cheat: | duties include t\ .Hurry!
