After being tied at the end of the first half 34-34, the Lady Gamecocks overcame a nine-point second-half deficit. The team was led by Lori Joyner's 22 points. Memphis State took a 47-38 lead with 14:30 left to play. Carolina answered with a 15-0 fun of their own that gave them a 53-47 lead, the biggest lead of the game for Carolina. The rest of the game saw the lead alternate between the two squads, with neither team leading by more than three points. At the end of regulation, the score was tied at 66-66. At the opening tip for overtime, Brit Canty took the ball and drove in for a lay-up. Memphis State tied the score one more time before USC scored the last five points of the game, four from Marsha Williams. Behind Joyner's 22 points, the Lady Gamecocks were paced by 19 points from Shannon Johnson and 10 points from Marsha Williams. The leading rebounders for Carolina were Michelle Murray with 14 and Marsha Williams, who added 10. Joyner also led the team with five assists. The victory, which came on the heals of a 24-point loss to Ole Miss, raised the Lady Gamecocks record to 10-6. They stand at 3-3 in the SEC. Carolina's next game is against Southern Conference member East Tennessee State. The game is at 5 p.m. at Frank McGuire Arena, followed by the men's game against Georgia. With all the hype and excitement that comes with the sporting world's most recognized match-up and without taking anything away from the game, what is all the -hype about? It's just another football game. Just a game that will be over in less than four or five hours. But for the one Darticular Sunday it is played, the nation will be entirely different. I bet a lot of you don't know that for the past, let's say, zillion years, the Super Bowl has been the most watched event of the year. Neilsen and Arbitron ratings skyrocket for the lucky network that gets to televise the game. One single minute of advertising during the Super Bowl will cost an average of a million dollars. Companies like Budweiser will spend millions upon millions of dollars to show their beer in the hands of bikini-wearing, long-legged beauties hugging some macho surfer on a tropical island. It's just one football* game. Out of the hundreds of games played during any given season, this is the one that counts. People will spend hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars to have parties at their homes. Potato chip sales will boom, while cola, beer and even Cheese Wiz sales will go through the roof. The Super Bowl is a novelty, an 80-or-so in a lifetime opportunity for people. They love it. They live it. They get heart attacks during it. It's just another game, yet the national economy will rise as a e|llWjJ5-l|^J r all pricing for entire stay CALL TOl ANTRAL SPRING BREAK INFORM/. 1-800-32 -fijs. 7AM-7PM M-Th, 7AM5PM Fri, 9AM-5PK 1 K-sfc) 24 HOUR FAX RESERVATIONS (3 'Depending on break dales and len? | 10 visits | for $30 I I New bulbs! You'll probably be able to pay for your college career by investing in Super Bowls. So what am I babbling about, sayeth ye? This football game is more a part of our culture than many other things that maybe should be. More people were worried about the Cowboys making it than starving people in Somalia or another invasion of Iraq. More people were worried about Troy Aikman's right arm than they were about abortion or health care. So enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday. Just sit back and watch the game. Get fat and drunk and scream your heads off. But don't let this one game govern your lives. It's just a game. Don't let it undermine important issues ? issues that will affect you a lot more in your life than a football game between the Cowboys and the Bills.
