Newtoi By ANDREW BORGERT Staff Writer The South Carolina men's has- R ketball team showed a pulse of life El over Christinas break but still saw itself lose SEC games to Arkansas and Auburn. vThe Gamecocks returned from their short break to participate in the Abdow's Hall of Fame Classic, where they defeated a well-regard- 131 ed Alabama-Birmingham team in the first round 75-68. Troy McKoy led the Gamecocks, scoring 18 ? points, and netted the game-lying three-pointer that triggered a 10-0 Gamecock run to close the game. The next night Carolina was stuffed by the host team, the Massachusetts Minutemen, by the A score of 84-66. The killing blow in L< the game came in the first half, as A UMass forward Tony Barbee M scored 19 points on 8-of-8 shoot- A ing. Carolina was never able to tie q the game. Upon returning to Columbia, s Carolina played host to Mercer. A Surprisingly, the Bears gave the v Gamecocks all they could handle, and Carolina's poor free throw A shooting once again proved to be a Ui key to the game. Leading by live with under two minutes remaining, the Gamecocks we missed the front ends of two one- fin and-one chances while Mercer hit a wi pair of free throws to cut the lead to three.
