Prograi some fr go to CO By ANDREA LLOYD Staff Writer Low grades and Scholastic Aptitude Test scores in high school don't always mean someone will make a poor college student, a freshman program at USC shows. The Provisional Year program at USC admits 250 freshmen each fall semester whose college board scores and class rank in high school fall just below the usual requirements. Director of Admissions Terry Davis said the program gives students a chance to prove themselves. All incoming USC freshmen must nave maintained a C average in certain academic courses in high school, including college preparatory English courses, lab sciences, algebra and two years of foreign language. A student's SAT scores and class rank is then considered, Davis said. If a student's SAT scores and class rank are just below the normal cutoff, he or she is admitted to the Provisional Year program on a first-come, first-served basis, she said. "Students don't have to apply for the program," Davis said. "As applications come in, those qualified are put in the provisional category." Davis said provisional year students take two 15-hour semesters. They must have a 2.0 grade point average by the end of 30 hours to continue at the university. The classes the students take are all for full college credit and apply to most degree programs. These students can live on campus and get involved in university activities just like any other students.
