1 Priests Anglicans vote to ordain women, rift between churches imminent On Nov. 11, the Anglican Church voted to do something that is sure to shake the religious community: the ordaining of women priests. In a narrow vote, the Anglican Church decided 458 years of tradition would be thrown out the window beginning in 1994. For years, the Episcopal Church, the U.S. branch of Anglicanism, has been ordaining women ministers. Women priests are nothing new. In many religions, like Shintoism in Japan and Baalism in ancient Canaan, women were considered holy and deserving of positions of religion authority. With the vote comes praise and dissatisfaction. Many priests in London have threatened to quit, which could create a massive rift between the disputing factions. Religious splits are nothing new since the Anglican Church was formed out of a dispute between King Henry VIII and the Roman Catholic Church over divorce. Anglican laymen have said the vote defies the moral foundations of Christianity. According to a fifth century Catholic doctrine, women were not to be ordained because Jesus only had male apostles. To do so would violate holy ordinances. Archbishop of Canterbury George Carrey has sought to .repair the centuries old rift between the two churches. Reconciliation between the two churches could be severely damaged as the Catholic Church has sought to make it easy for Anglican priests to convert and become Catholic priests. For the last few decades, many Anglican priests have been ordained into the Catholic Church, even if they were married. In the future, the Catholic Church could be faced with Anglican women priests wanting to convert to Catholicism. The ball would definitely be in the Catholic Church's court as they would have to defend their position solely on the basis of fairness. The Catholic Church would possibly face a split over women's issues, forcing the hierarchy to re-evaluate its positions on a wide range of issues. Can Catholics begin to ponder the possibility of a iemaie pontiff? The future of Christianity will be decided in the upcoming years as all churches begin to realistically look at the number of priests and ministers available to continue their teachings. Churches will have to look to sources other than males. Edito Baha'i religioi More than 70 years ago, the writings of the Baha'i faith foreshadowed that if the problem of racial prejudice between blacks and whites were not remedied, the day would come when "the streets of American cities" would "run with blood." During the past few weeks, we have seen, yet again, racial tensions increase on campus. _ Much criticism has been expressed, but there has been little offered in the way of constructive solutions. We, the members of the Baha'i Club, feel compelled to offer the principles that Baha'u'llah, the prophet-founder of the Baha'i Faith, put forth more than a century ago for overcoming racism. The first step in resolving racism is recognition of the pivotal teaching of Baha'u'llah, the concept of oneness of humanity, which is a statement of principle and an assertion of the goal of humanity. He declared, "The well-being of mankind, its inrl eoonritir oro imottoinoKlo unloco aim ov/cuin^, cuiv unaiuiiiiauiw uiuv/Od aiiu until its unity is firmly established." This is a unity celebrating the diversity of humanity, not one that aims at uniformity. This principle of unity is one which all human sciences confirm. Recogniton of this principle implies the abandonment of all prejudices of race, color, creed, nation, and class ? everything which enables people to consider themselves superior to others.
