Gamecoc By ANDREW BORGERT Staff Writer Since the first homecoming game in 1930, the the Gamecocks have played a wide variety of teams ranging from the good to the had to the ugly. USC's first homecoming game was held Nov. 15, 1930. The Gamecocks, coached then by Billy : I.aval, played Sewanee. At the time, Sewanee was a major player in the ranks of southern football, as evidenced by the fact that the school was a charter member of the SEC in 1933. The Cocks won the game 14-13, enroute to a 6-4 season. Among the teams Carolina has played for homecoming, Maryland ranks first' in total games. As an ACC member, USQ played Marykind nine times for homecoming. The first meeting was on Dec. 1, 1 Air u 1G_ IV-+."), W1U1 UlC ltlJ/3 Winning iy13. In 1971, die last homecoming meeting between the teams, Paul Dietzel's Carolina squad won by a convincing 35-6 score. Maryland actually holds a winning homecoming record against USC with a 5-4 edge. Another traditional homecoming opponent has been Furman. The Paladins, who beat USC 44-0 in the Gamecock's inagural football gtune in 1892. have appeared in eight homecoming games, most recently in 1951. USC holds a 4-31 homecoming record against Fur man. North Carolina has been less kind than Furman and Maryland. The Tar Heels have played in Carolina homecoming games seven times, winning five. The last time die two met was 1963.
