Wednesday, October 28, 1992 Bravesi thanks, COLUMNIST Now I know how John Elway and the Denver Broncos must feel along with their fans. Once again, the Braves have failed to win the "Big One" and go home disappointed. I feel the Braves, however, deserve a little more credit than the press has been giving them lately, especially from a certain "Sportin' Fool." Sure, I am agitated as much as any diehard Braves fan that the Braves have not won a world championship yet. I have been waiting since I was 5 to see the Braves win it all, proving I am not a "loser" or a "fair weather fan" as described in an earlier column. The only fair weather fans I have seen (besides Washington Deadskins, oh, excuse me, Redskins fans) have been all the people rooting for the Blue Jays just going against the grain and spiting the rest of the normal population. In fairness, I have to give the Blue Jays credit. They outplayed uie craves in six games anu capitalized on the Braves' mistakes throughout the Series. They got the big hits at the right time and the big pitches too. In addition, they beat what is probably the best pitching staff in baseball and what I still believe is the best team. Who can argue with a 98-64 record? Give the Braves some credit, though. Besides Toronto, every other team in baseball would have killed to have been in the position the Braves were in. How can some one say tne ts raves are noi a reai team? I have got six words for you USC downs By ANDREW BORGERT Staff Writer The USC men's swimming and diving team had a successful weekend, defeating the College of Charleston in a relay dual meet Saturday, winning all but one event. Team captain Rik Leishman and senior Tom DeJarnette each set \ individual records as they helped 1 U1C Squall coin pv/vi lU/Uiua. Leishman, a junior, was a member of the Great Britain's Olympic team that competed in Barcelona, Spain, this past summer. He not only set the two individual records but also swam on the 4x100 medley relay team which set another pool record. Other members of the relay team were junior Drew Ruggieri, sophomore Mark Dicus and junior Dan Schar. Senior Jeff Palm and junior Jon Moore joined Leishman and DeJarnette on the record breaking trend. NETWORK 252-8393 24 Hours I How to free yourself from a 9 foot BOA COr^SJRICTOR? Tom Glavine, Steve Avery and John Smoltz (actuw ally that is seven words, but I guess since I am a loser Braves fan, I can not count) plus the Braves have a solid hitting lineup. Try names like Terry Pendleton (who is my MVP), Sid Bream, Brian Hunter, David Justice, Ron Gant, Otis Nixon (if you think he is ugly, some of you guys should look in the mirror, and ask your girlfriends why they always want the lights down real low) and Deion Sanders (Tim McCarver's new drinking pal). In addition, the Braves have one of the best baseball managers in Bobby Cox. No, Cox is not God. He makes mistakes like any human being (except for sports editors, of course). Plus, Cox's players look up to him and, let's face it, he did not get Manager of the Year last year for nothing. And ves. John Schnerholz is a genius. He is the man who put the icing on the cake for the Braves by acquiring guys like Sid Bream and Terry Pendleton. Yes, I am agitated the Braves came up short in the World Series, but I am not throwing in the towel. The Braves will lose a couple of people, but they will still have most of their great, young pitching staff left, including a bullpen with a lot of potential with guys like Mark Wohlers, Mike Stanton, Kent Mercker and Marvin Freeman. Also, look for Barry Bonds to be in the outfield with Gant, Nixon and Justice at first. So expect the Braves to give it another try in the World Series after they win their third straight National League pennant. Source: USC Athletic Department The 0am Spo WnnHs i T t vr w By NANCY SALOMONSKY Sports Editor With two wins under their belts, Head Coach Sparky Woods and the Gamecock football team are confident going into the Saturday g matchup with the 16th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers. The Volunteers were ranked as high as the No. 4 team in the nation at one point in the season. Now things are different. UT has lost its past two games against Arkansas, 24-25, and Alabama, 10-17. This past weekend, the Volunteers were idle. On the other hand, South Carolina is coming off two consecutive victories, one at home against No. 15 Mississippi State, 21-6, and one on the road against Vanderbilt, 21-17. "The Gamecocks are playing harder and with more confidence than they were over three weeks ago," UT Head Coach Johnny Majors said. The Vanderbilt win was an important one because it proved the Gamecocks can win on the road and come from behind to win. "The Vanderbilt win was a team victory and a great win for us," Woods said. "Not only was it a win on the road and against an I SEC team, it was a win on turf, which is something that we haven't done in a while." "The victory relieves a lot of pressure," outside linebacker j Ernest Dixon said. "We are play- II nig ^uuu uui tiui aa ^uuu aa wu can. We will beat Tennessee if we play to our capability.
