Alkie Self-defense thr Eastern wisd< Doug Wedell, David Thornt Aikido moves i Stephanie By CHRIS MULDROW Staff Writer Many people ininK aikioo is one of the martial arts, but a new member of USC's Seidokan Aikido sports club will not be taught how to throw lightning karate chops or deliver fancy kicks. "Aikido is the art of selfdefense," said club member Jenny Wu. "There are no offensive moves; you never attack, kick or punch. You are defending, either by throwing or getting out of the way of attack." Wu decided to join the club after hearing about violence occurring on campus. "Self-defense is important to me," Wu said. "People around here are scared to walk around alone. Now that I've started Aikido, I feel like it's a little safer to walk around campus." Club member Jim Hill said the tl unique spiritual aspect of the sport ii influenced him to join. "I wanted to learn a martial art, v but I'm not into breaking arms and " stuff like that," Hill said. "I like the c harmonizing part of the sport. We n learned that everything we do is & related to our 'center,' which is one central point in our bodies. We f< must always find our center, ii whether we're doing breathing tl exercises or defending ourselves." n Hill said Aikido teaches an v awareness of everything around a person and centers on the concept t< of blending in with nature. g "Aikido means living in harmo- o ny with nature," Wu said. Basil, who has always been interested in philosophy, theology and history, was originally a math major, but it was his love of history which led him toward his field.
