Songs such as "Stargazer" an "Man of Golden Words," which th 1991 Andrew Wood tribute albur Temple of the Dog was namec showcase the band's soulful edgt while "Come Bite the Apple" an "Stardog Champion" play up t their harder rock 'n' roll roots. The remaining songs do not con sistently reach the height of th first sons, although "Chanees. "Helpless" and "If I Can't Changi Your Mind" come close. Mould's angst has rarely beei more refined as he allows himself; wider stylistic territory than he ha before. "And now you find as time goe by/You're left with nothing/ meaninj much," Mould sings on "Helpless,' one of several songs about failed an failing relationships. In "Fortune Teller," Mould' disillusionment toward life is pre sented while "Hoover Dam'"s star images are terrifying and sad.
