Although campus officials have enamed the lobby laborers'as the Residence Hall Security Staff, stulents affectionately know the desk issistants as the people who check visitors in and out of the building ind keep a general lookout on lob)y activities. Eunika Simons is one of the lesk assistants, and she has the :oveted job of working at all-male Weston Hall. "It's not a hard job, but it's fun," Simons said. Simons almost lost her job this year. Because desk assistants were being hired through work study programs, housing services planned to fill the positions with work study students. Luckily for Simons, not enough work study students needed their positions. "By the grace of God, I got my job again," Simons said. "When I thought I didn't have a job here, 1 was hurt. I knew I'd miss the greai staff members." Few major problems occur ai Preston Hall, Simon said, because she claims it mainly houses "more mature" upperclassmen. Having tc call people who have exceeded their visitation limit or dealing with someone who has had toe much to drink are two issues thai she handles a lot, especially or weekends. But Simons' least favorite pari of the job is one that haunts hei daily: girlfriends with attitudes. Oct. 27 will feature music by Haydn. Nov. 19 will have the winners of the USC Concerto-Aria competition. In February, the Mastersingers and Richard Conant from USC will join the orchestra for a great perfromance. "A lot of girlfriends come in alone sometimes to see the log-in sheet of who's checked into their boyfriend's room, but I have to explain to them that the sheet is confidential. By law, it is a violation of privacy to release the names of visitors." Simons said she looks forward to coming to work, and she appreciates the hospitably of the students t in the residence hall for inviting her to their social functions even when she is off the clock. : Tuca Thompson, a work study : student, works at LaBorde Residence Hall in the Towers Area. The music the orchestra plays would be considered difficult for a major orchestra to play well and it is a compliment to Portnoy and the students at USC that they play at a level which prepares them for orchestra careers. If last season is any indication, this season will be a great one. :ion, security we're really strict about visitation policies this year. Sometimes last year, visitors who had figured out ways to gain entry into the building after visiting hours would run out the front door past the desk assistant first thing in the morning!" Kerry Reese, a desk assistant at South Tower, said the job is a great way to meet people.
