Soccer By NANCY SALOMONSKY Sports Editor The University of South Carolina men's soccer team is looking forward to an impressive season in the Southeastern Conference. With a preseason rank of 14, the namf/Tw^lrc will lnnlr tn thp lp.adp.r ship of senior co-captains Ruben Tufino and Chris Crosby. Tufino, a midfielder from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, was named freshman of the year by SOCCER AMERICA in 1989. Coming into his senior year, Tufino has accumulated 48 points, which ties him for 15th on the all-time scoring list. "Ruben returns as one of our center midfielders, and in my opinion is one of the premier midfielders in the country," Head Coach Mark Berson said. c Along with Tufino, senior Chris Crosby, an outside defender from Georgetown, S.C., will help provide leadership to the Gamecocks. "Crosby gives us excellent leadership and is a very good marking j back," Berson said. Other key players to watch will j be Chris Faklaris, Rob Smith and ^ Matt Haiduk. , Up front the Gamecocks hope to fill the absence of graduate Andrew Coggins with the speed and size of ; s of Chris Faklaris. Faklaris, a 6'3" sophomore from Stone Mountain, i Ga., scored eight goals and collected four assists as a freshman. Sophomore midfielder Rob Smith is an impressive player in i the midfield. He has great speed and can hit the ball as well as any one on the team," Berson said. Along with being one of the top 1 teams in the nation, South Carolina also plays one of the toughest schedules. Nine of the teams that USC , faces are in the top 20 teams in the , nation.
