Friday, April 24, 1992 Tigers By NANCY SALOMONSKY Staff Writer The No. 2 ranked Clemson Tigers defeated the South Carolina baseball team Tuesday night, 10-9. on Tiger Field. South Carolina was led by junior outfielder D.T. Cromer, who had four hits and drove in two runs for the evening, while junior first baseman Jeff Parnell, senior Brian Lawler and senior outfielder Jerry Shepherd had two hits each. Freshman Mark Gugino also hit a tworun homer, his first of the season. South Carolina took an early 5-0 lead with four runs in the second and one in the third. Shepherd opened the second inning with a double down the right field line. One out later senior third baseman Burke Cromer walked. With two out and two on, junior Mike McGuire had an infield hit to load the bases. Clemson's starting Golf team By SEAN RYAN Assistant Sports Editor The South Carolina men's and women's golf teams will always have Georgia on their mind after last weekend. The men's squad traveled to Savannah, Ga., to compete in the 1992 Kemira Intercollegiate Invitational Golf Tournament. At the same time in Athens, Ga., the Lady Gamecocks placed fourth out of 17 teams in the Women's Southern Intercollegiate Championship. The tournament was held at the University Golf Course, the home course of the Bulldogs. The Gamecocks in Savannah won their tournament with a team score of 853 strokes, 11 below par. The Tigers scored the next eighi runs to take an 8-5 advantage heading into the eigth. Clemson's Jeff Miller started the attack with a triple to right center, his fifth ol the season. Clemson took the lead with four runs in the seventh inning on a grand slam home run by Keith Williams. This was his second of the season. The Gamecocks came back in the eigth. Lawler, Parnell and Shes win in G the Gamecocks in 2nd place, six strokes off the pace. The Gamecocks led from day one after burning the course with a 12 under par first-day total of 276. Individually, three Gamecock golfers placed in the top eight. Senior Michael Christie led the way with a three day total of 210 strokes. Cristie finished third in the tournament, one stroke out of second and just four strokes out of first. Junior Carl Paulson followed Cristie's lead with a four-under 212, which was good for sixth place. Senior Daniel Seawell finished eighth, posting a one-under 215. In Athens, the Lady Gamecocks finished ahead of four Southeastern Conference teams with a team total of 939 strokes. Valentine started day three in a tie for third place with eventual winner, Vicki Goetze of Georgia. Goetze won the U.S. Amateur Tournament when she was 16, and the World Amateur at age 17.
