Kate Brondino, assistant director of the employment center, said students should be well-prepared and informed. "The student should do some soul searching initially," she said. Students should figure out what they want out of a job: additional income or career experience; a 'ow-key or high-paced environment. When calling potential employers, it is important to be clear and polite. And any written matieral should be double-checked and free of any grammatical errors, she said. If any employer is not available when the student calls, Brondino said he or she should find out when the employer is available as I . you've c Congratulations r~? Students should inform their roommates of their job search so the phone is always answered politely and answering machines are ...UU pugiainmtu wiui d[}\Jlupildie messages, she said. "You don't want anything to reflect negatively toward you." Brondino said employers are screening applicants more than ever. "It isn't unusual to have two or even three interviews for the same job these days," she said. "There is a lot of competition out there right now, and students need to do whatever they can to make themselves stand out as an applicant," she said. If a student is lucky enough to get an interview, he or she should prepare to make a good impression. "Always dress neatly no matter what the job," Brondino said. Another thing students can do to make a good impression, she said, is to send a thank you note to the interviewer a day or two later. 1 Thp. pmnlnvmpnt rpntpr nnHpr- i stands that students may not know 1 who to contact, how to handle an interview, or the many legal issues that may arise when looking for a ( job, like drug-testing or physical 1 fitness examinations at the applic- 1 ant's expense. The employment center has several workshops to help students 1 find the right job and make the right impression. A new workshop addressing part-time and summer job searches is set for April 21 at 3 p.m. in ] room 634A of the Business Admi- ; nistration Building. The Job Market Consumer < Workshop is scheduled for April i 23 at 1 p.m. at the same location. This workshop deals with reading the classifieds. CareerView is the newest opportunity offered by the employment center. It is a project in which stu dents interested in a particular job can shadow a professional in that field. "It's a lot more than sitting down and talking to someone about a job. The student actually shadows the professional's every move for an entire work day to see what the job really entails," Brondino said. The employment center has job listings that are updated each day. Brondino said the students of USC are lucky to have such a comprehensive program, although awareness is a problem. Brondino said many students incorrectly assume that because the center is located in the BA Building, it serves only business majors. She said any student can come in and register with the center. The center provides a board of job listings, internships and coops, as well as a library for researching particular jobs or linking jobs with particular majors after graduation. SCE&G provided the center with its bus routes and schedules. Brondino said this service is for students who want to work but lack transportation. She said students can come in to use the facilities or to discuss problems thay have experienced or any questions that arise. Brondino said while the deadlines for obtaining summer internships are almost up, the availibility for fall and spring internships will be high. unamP! uxu.
