1,838 un From Staff Reports USC students will receive their degrees during an historic commencement ceremony May 9. The ceremony will include the investiture of USC's 26th president, John M. Palms. Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. In Carolina Coliseum. S.C. Governor Caroll Campbell will piCMUC. The commencement ceremony for graduate students will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the coliseum. The commencement address will be delivered by Alex Sanders, chief judge of the S.C. Court of Appeals who will assume -? ? _ r t _ii r me presidency 01 me v^oiiege ui Charleston in October. Sanders will be presented an honorary doctor of laws degree during the May 8 commencement exercises, at which his daughter Zoe Caroline will be awarded a law degree. USC expects to award 1,838 undergraduate degrees from the students at the Columbia campus, as well as 1,398 graduate degrees, 58 medical degrees and 268 law degrees during spring commencement ceremonies. Participating in the investiture during the undergraduate commencement ceremony will be faculty and student representatives, who will present Palms with the expectations their separate constituencies have of him. Greeting Palms on behalf of governmental officials will be U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond. Mungo will be assisted by Dr. Gunther Hoist, chairman of the Investiture Committee and past cnairman or ine iacuuy senate. Palms will then present the commencement address followed by the conferring of degrees to the graduating students. Commencement ceremonies will conclude before 12:30 p.m. The coliseum will open for seating at 9 a.m. Saturday. Formal commencement activities begin at 9:20 a.m. with a musical prelude by the USC Symphony Orchestra. On Friday, the coliseum will open for seating at 2 p.m., with the or chestra's musical prelude beginning at 2:20 p.m. The parking lot on the Greene Street side of the coliseum will be available for handicapped parking. Sanders, a Columbia native, was recently selected to serve as the 19th president of the College of Charleston. A 1962 graduate of USC's School of Law, he was appointed to the S.C. Palms began his term as presi dent of USC March 15, 1991. He came to USC from Georgia State University, where he had served as ? president since 1989. Palms rose through the faculty ranks while at | Emory University, including a sixyear tenure as vice president for academic affairs. He has served as nuclear research officer with the U.S. Air Force in New Mexico and taught p at the Air Force Academy. During ihi?
