Marine science junior Stacy Richardson, who raced with her family for seven years on the Chesapeake Bay, joined the Sailing and Windsurfing Club alter she saw a meeting advertised in The Gamecock. Richardson, now the club's president, said half of the club's 25 members arc avid sailors with prior experience, and the other half are relatively unexperienced and just like to have fun at Lake Murray. Club members sail on Lake Murray every week, even during the winter. USC has one- and two-person boats and windsurfers available at Lake Murray for the club's use. For a $25 semester fee, members of the club can go to Lake Murray at any lime and use the boats and club equipment. Club members lake new members to Lake Murray to teach them how to sail and windsurf until the new member is proficient enough with the equipment to use it alone. "It's a good diversion," said geography senior Jeff Olson, who grew up sailing on Lake Ontario with his family. In addition to its weekend trips to Lake Murray, the club has three regalias, or series of races. USC competes with Clemson, the College of Charleston and N.C. State University. Last year, USC placed third in competition with seven schools. The Mountaineering and White Water Rafting Club also plans a variety of outdoor activities like camping, rock climbing, kayaking and canoeing. For a S15 fee, members can use the club's climbing equipment and kayaking and canoeing equipment and storage. Some of the club's favorite sites for its year-long trips are Looking Glass, N.C. and Crowders in Gaslonia, S.C. Rock climbing involves a lot of skill, strength and technique, but beginners don't need these characteristics and abilities to join the club. Experienced members teach new members the ropes and safety precautions. To keep in shape for rock climbing, club members practice climbing a wall at a friend's house. Some members also do finger pull-ups on door jambs to strengthen their hands and ' fingers. "When you're finished climbing, you'll be hurting in a lot of places," club president Phillip Bramblett said. The Sailing and Windsurfing Club meets at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in Russell House room 201. The Mountaineering and White Water Rafting Club meets at 7 p.m. in Russell House room 304.
