It is quite obvious that Mr. su Foster has very opinionated views concerning student government. This does not mean, however, that his opinions de- c serve any merit, whatsoever. With more money coming from parkg, USC could buy new, badly needed imputers, reference books and audio/ sual aids along with various other learng tools which can only help students, and s, faculty too. Finally, out-of-state students pay more an $10,000 yearly in tuition, room and ard and books. Is it fair to make students 10 need something as basic as transporta>n pay $20 to keep a car on campus? The iversity has incredible gall to sqeeze evy penny out of its students when they are eady paying its salaries. Even if the university does not choose to ing in more money by following through th such a reasonable plan, there is other benefit aside from profit. If faculty id for parking, and profit was not the ob;tive, they could lower student parking es a few dollars and still generate the me amount of money a year. It's all ative. It's kind of like that Sally Strothers com;rcial where 17 cents a day can feed a ild. Well, for only $20 a semester, USC :ulty can help feed the university. That's ot less than 17 cents a day, Sally. r. Wagenheim '. Wagenheim is a staff writer for The mecock. faculty deserve rchase in about 2,000 to 3,000 years, lis is not a significant amount of money re, folks, except to the professors, who > the ones expected to dish it out. Most importantly, the whole matter boils wn to one basic question: What selfipecting business (yes, the university is a siness) would be so audacious as to arge its employees for a place to park len it has an option to do otherwise? The idea is ludicrous. No employee juld be charged for something necessary his or her job to be performed. Charging a parking place is like charging for the velope the employee's paycheck comes or charging them rent for their office, rtainly it can be done, but is it ethical? Why should anyone be forced to pay ;ir employer back for the "privilege" of a ice to park? They shouldn't. We have the ility to supply our professors with the nimal perk of a free parking space, and ire is not excuse to withhold it from m. Put simply, an employer cannot, in good nscience, charge employees for a job cessity, and parking place, without ques n, falls into that category. Lee Clonz e Clonz is Assistant Carolina! Not that I find voting a pain in the butt, it is that choosing a candidate is something I never look forward to. Unfortunately, most students at USC just don't give a damn about voting, and then they bitch and moan about the ineffectiveness of student government. The reality is that most adults don t vote, and don't care until they realize that they disapprove of the elected. Which is then too late. Our campus has an ugly history of student apathy, and I don't see much change in the future unless everyone gets off their cabooses and gets involved. When the student body has the opportunity to vote again Thursday, I expect a drop in voters because 90 percent of the students were couch potatoes for the first election. Only the people who vote Thursday will determine who will be president. And if you don't like that choice, and you didn't vote, that will be your own fault. If he doesn't listen to your needs, (the public empowers the government, at least it's supposed to work that way) and you didn't vote, I don't blame him. Remember, actions do speak louder than words. On the bright side of this election was Chris Bickel, a write-in presidential candidate. He announced his intentions at 10:30 a.m. last Wednesday. Though he waited until the last minute to join the race, he made the most annoying two days of the campaigning a bit more tolerable. He wasn't the clean cut, I'll kiss your butt if you vote for me, candidate. His campaign posters were chock full of surreal photos and humorous, refreshing promises. Typically, we are bombarded by promises and ideas that will see their day as much as a thousand -joints of light will provide. These promises haven't done any more for the reputation of politics than cake did to help Marie Antoinette's reputation. Not that I expected to ever see any of Chris' ideas come to fruition, but they added some much needed sarcasm and humor to a dispassionate election. Bickel's plans included the following: Petitioning to have the USC Gamecock mascot, a symbol of an illegal animal cruelty and sport, changed to a more humane and civilized mascot, such as the USC sheep. Petitioning to have money collected from parking fines used to erect a statue of USC Parking Patrol Officer in the Horseshoe, for students to pelt with eggs and fresh fruit. Encouraging racial harmony by deeming Martians the official scapegoat. Attempting to enforce tough restrictions on any USC merchandise using the word "cock" as a juvenile innuendtj. Encouraging the breakdown of gender roles by eliminating events like "Homecoming Queen," and replacing it with a non-gender specific event, like "Homecoming Dictator." His promises were approximately as tangible as the other candidates'. It would have made for an interesting year if he had won. iGamecock Editor in Chief Rrif w?rH Managing Editor Titfc Watts Copy Desk Chief Kathy Heberger Asst.
