[ DO CAUCl Student disgust not apathetic To the editor: Once again the silent majority has chosen to voice its discontent and lack of confidence in the office of student body president. This should not come as a surprise. The majority of USC students are astute enough to realize the fact that the student body presidential office is a powerless position held primarily for the benefit of the officeholder's resume. To blindly equate the lack of voter turnout with apathy is ludicrous. We care about tuition increases. We care about visitation. We care about the parking situation. We care, in fact, beyond our capacity under the current system, to alter these or any other policies. We do not, however, give a rat's ass who the student body president is. i 'OINT , : 1 I Desare English "I think j have to mzea ^etc eciate what we have until it's it, which we haven't appre- """"* aying depletion of the ozone can do to euro environmental ; in nearly every household. / ^anized recycling programs to ^cycling program. _ ing programs run by clubs, J\ and dining facilities. ate. If you voted Thursday you wasted your time. Your time would have been better spent cleaning up a bit of the crap these candidates have so disgracefully littered our campus with. The student body president is just the head sheep (the Board of Trustee's sacrificial lamb) in an embarrassinly long line ol frustrated voters, it you want change, keep a close eye on the Board of Trustees and please refrain from calling others apathetic. Many of you have apparently confused the word "apathy" with the.word "disgust." We are not apathetic; we are thoroughly disgusted. John C. Ip funding if Littering causes financial wastes - Christopher Smith ito/~* cm Ain ca L^a\*u ycai uov- apciiua IU v^icun up this campus. USC spends anywhere from $6,000 to $8,000 of this total on plastic bags to hold trash. Before you get upset with the administration, you should look at the source of this literal waste. Each morning, 25 people must spend an average of 2.2 hours picking up litter on our campus. This figure does not even include the cleaning of classroom buildings or permanent damage from vandalism and littering. USC has been recognized nationally as having a beautiful and historic campus. Yet many people's first impression of our campus is seeing outdated flyers plastered to walls and classrom buildings, cups and paper strewn along walkways and trays left on the back patio of Russell House. There is only so much that Operational Services can do to clean up after irresponsible people. The Student Senate recently passed a resolution dealing with flyers on campus. The university has a strict solicitation policy concerning the placement of flyers on university property: not on building surfaces, trees, light posts etc., but it is not routinely enforced The Senate's resolution, which is being sent to Columbia merchants, takes a slightly different slant. In summary, it encourages student organizations and area businesses to consider the economic as well as environmental impact that their advertisements have on our campus and requests that the university review its solicitation policy. According to the resolution, a list of flagrant violators of the solicitation policy will be submitted periodically to The Gamecock for possible publication. The Senate encourages you to take an active part in elimintating this waste of money ? especially during these tight-budget times. Begin by making a conscious effort to pick up your own litter ? the university is not your personal maid! Also, if your organization is hanging flyers for an event, use some common sense (gasp!) when hanging them, and remember to remove them in a timely manner. We should also hold area businesses responsible for their actions in advertising on our campus. If you see flyers that have been placed in such a way that it damages university (in a sense, your) property, please tell the management that you do not appreciate it. Also, if a business is responsible in their advertising, tell them that you appreciate what they are doing and that you will continue to patronize them. It is about time that we, as students, take a stand about the senseless waste of money that irresponsible littering causes.
