The S.C. Slate Lady Bulldogs
never had a chance when they en
tcrcd the hallowed halls of Frank
McGuirc Arena Wednesday as
they lost to the Lady Gamecocks
72-55.
Ml The Lady Bulldogs ended their
RBQ 12-gamc winning streak as USC
! advanced to 12-12.
The Lady Gamecocks, who play
at Mississippi Stale Saturday, dominated
the game from the beginning.
Junior center Marsha Williams
used her quickness to control
the paint, while freshman guard
Chrisli Timmons opened up the inside
by hitting three 3-pointers in
the first half.
USC led by as many as 21
| - points with 6:15 left in the first
half until State began its relentless
^1 full-court press. "
The women handled the press
well in the first half by maintainock
ing a 16-point lead at halftime.

much like the first. Williams
scored easily in the paint, and the
Lady Gamecocks supporting cast
aided in building a 27-point lead.
State came out after a time out
with 14:28 left in the first half and
began to cut into USC's league.
Sharon Walker hit a jump shot
with 13:47 left in the game, and
the Lady Bulldogs began their
ficsly press.
The press dropped the Lady
Gamecocks' lead to 15 and sent
Williams to the bench with five
fouls with 5:31 left in the game.
"We handled it very well to begin
with," Carolina head coach
Nancy Wilson said. "The main
problem was Marsha on (he bench

guard Nicki Bass, who had

The spring season is all that
stands between the two and their
attempt at joining the ranks of the
LPGA. Both will compete in various
tournaments throughout the
summer, including the U.S. Women's
Open, if they qualify.
However, making the LPGA
tour will be anything but easy.
Both will attend qualifying school,
where they will compete against
other LPGA hopefuls for a limited
number of available openings for
the tour. Qualifying school will be
in the third week of August in
Venice, Fla.
"I enjoy going places and seeing
different things," Eckroth said.
If things work out, Eckroth and
Valentine may indeed be going
places.
