Viewpoint Japan Insults to workforce not wrong, but misdirected Since the onset of the Bush regime, America has not done an incredible amount of introspective studying. That is, not until Japan gave us a smack in the face that knocked our rose-colored glasses right off. The Japanese are just calling it like they see it. A slumping economy, high unemployment rates and massive importing of technical products make up the picture they see. Americans are losing the drive "to live by the sweat of their brow," Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa said in the latest of a series of insults. Then the country gets highly offended and claims it ca.'t understand why he would say something so preposterous. Miyazawa sees things from an outsider's view, based on a completely different culture. He sees the symptoms clearly, but has diagnosed the wrong disease. It is not a lazy populus, it is a mismanaged one. Just as there are lazy individuals in Japan, there are lazy Americans. It is a fantasy to assume that people are going to slave at low paying jobs when they can make more in government compensation by being on welfare or unemployment. Perhaps if people had to take a job from the government to get unemployment funds or welfare, then our work force would be larger and productivity would increase. Why should single parents with small children work when half the time they can't make enough to pay the babysitter for the day because there's no comprehensive day care system. Japan would be unable to accurately make the claim that a huge portion of our work force is illiterate without the backing of a poorly funded education system. A system unable to offer students with special needs any alternatives besides falling between the cracks. And we would have a large number of intelligent students pouring into technical fields if college and university costs were not so astronomical. Now it seems that only people who get scholarships or who are from affluent families can afford to attend. America is definitely ailing, but it is from an ineffective political machine with no social conscience, not from 250 million lazy people.
