Viewpoint Cuts Bush must slash defense budget, focus on problems at home You must know my resolve. This much, and no more, George Bush claimed about military spending cuts in the State of the Union Address. Well, Mr. Bush, you must know our resolve. More, much more, or your monarchy will end. You know, what the people, whom you supposedly serve, want. It's the America-first movement. The middle class is locking arms with the poor and saying enough. America first. Our schools, our streets, our jobs, our homes, our environment and our future. They are at stake. And they are continuing to be compromised through neglect. America spends too much money on the military. It's that simple. The average citizen, whether Republican or Democrat, woman or man, student or professional, black or white, agrees. Wake up Mr. Bush. You can no longer paralyze us with massive paranoia over the Red Threat. You and your former cronies have played all of your aces. You're scrambling for new ones ? The drug threat, renegade nuclear powers, the terrorist threat, regional conflicts. Those threats are certainly real and merit a strong defense, but not an annual $297 billion one. Come down off the throne and help us. We don't need any more nuclear weapons, so we don't need the tritium-producing Savannah River Site, an environmental catastrophe waiting to hap pen. We don't need to spend billions protecting Europe and Japan. We need to educate our children, we need national health care, we need money for environmental cleanup and research. There's so much more. President Bush and future presidents, if you want a war you're going to get one. You're going to get one right in your own backyards if you don't start doing something for America.
