Literac1 a aims tc By TRACY MACK Staff Writer Students and members of the USC community will have an opportunity to learn more about illiteracy in America during Literacy Awareness Week Jan. 20-24. Sponsored by Campus Coalition lor Literacy, the week's events include a Read-A-Thon on the Russell House Patio, an open discussion on current literacy topics, a reading program for children and an informational display table on Greene Street. "I feel good about the program,." said Gopi Shah, chairman of the coalition's adult reading program. "I have been involved since the beginning and we have grown each semester. I look forward to this week." CCL is a volunteer student organization established in the spring of 1990 to make a positive impact on the literacy problem in S.C. pri national From The Associated Press South Carolina could get extra attention in the presidential race as the Republican Party holds a primary election on the same day South Carolina Democrats hold their first-ever primary. The state's primaries on March 7 have been significant in at least two previous presidential primaries, and that could be the case again, analysts say. Once the New Hampshire primary passes Feb. 18, the nation's media may look southward. South Carolina could be in the spotlight with two primaries the same day. The state GOP's decision to hold a primary is a rare event for the party with a sitting president running for a second term. The state's primary will mark the first head-to-hcad match-up between President George Bush and two controversial right-wing challengers. Coalition president Sara Cobb said according to U.S. Census figures, Columbia had 144,000 functionally illiterate adults in 1980. "We want to help," Cobb said. "As of a few years ago, students really did not have a good idea about the illiteracy problem because we are at an institution for higher learning. It seems that now more students are aware and more want to help." Figures support Cobb's conclusion. The coalition has grown from 20 to 70 students in four semesters. Coalition members work with four programs: Story Time serves children at Epworth Children's Home and Booker T. Washington Childcare Center. Sharing Time with Seniors serves the elderly. "The South was a Tire wall for Bush the last lime, and it looks like it's going to have to perform thai function again." he said. "If there's any evidence of trouble for him in South Carolina, which is probably one of two or three of the strongest states for him in the country, he's in deep trouble." As for the Democrats, the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries are key indicators for Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, Sabato said. Winning both could mean he will do well on Super Tuesday on March 10. "That should give him an enormous leg up for the nomination," Sabato said.
