The consensus of a number of sportswriters is that if Miami defeats Nebraska by more than 15 (the spread by which Washington defeated the Cornhuskers early in the season), they should be national champs. If the Canes win by less, and the Huskies beat the Wolverines, Washington should get the crown. This makes a little sense but it would still be much easier to clear off some land in the exact center of the country, mark off a field and let the two number ones go at it. But I'll get to that later. Situation number two would save the bowl games from a lot of scrutiny. I mean, there will still be some questions, just not as many if one No. 1 wins and the other loses. Over the summer, this new little system they created to help insure a true national champ obviously has flaws, as PAC-10 teams were not even included and Notre Dame at 9-3 and ranked 18 th in the poll, is going to the Sugar Bowl. I think a playoff would help, even if it were only the eight top teams. Of course, there would be confusion over who the eight would be, but you would get a national champ. Imagine if you will, the season ends right around Thanksgiving. The next week, the top four of eight seeds will host the other four. Then, you go to a neutral site and hold the semis the next week, which sets up, on New Year's Day, a national championship game. I'm just tired of starting the college season praying somebody from the Big 8 and an independent not locked into a bowl game will end up No. 1 and 2 so they will meet in the Orange Bowl. Or even two teams not locked up anywhere heading to the Fiesta Bowl. You could even keep minor bowls like the Libertv Bowl and Peach Bowl and the Gatorade/ Circle K/Alpo Dog Food Bowl, so teams like us would have hope of playing after the regular season. But at the top, why should we let goofy sportswriters like myself pick the best team when those two could play and answer that question themselves. Of course, I don't have a vote.
