The USC Dance Company will present its annual
fall dance concert Dec. 6-7 at the Drayton Hall
Theatre.
A number of dance styles and musical selections
will be featured, ranging from standard ballet classics
to modern original works by USC students and
alumni.
The concert includes selections from "Swan Lake"
ana bpnng Waters, a fast-moving, action-filled
work performed originally by members of the Bolshoi
Ballet. Also featured are "Flower Festival," a romantic
ballet and the balcony scene from "Romeo and Juliet."
One of the more unusual pieces will be 'The Merry
Widow" from the Franz Lehar Opera. Susan Anderson,
director of the USC Dance Company, describes
the rendition as "a stunning piece." It features 16 ballerinas
in elaborate costumes dancing with feathered
fans four feet tall.

The Dance Company will also be showcasing three
original jazz pieces by former USC student Jeff Johnson,
including "She Walks in Beauty," and "Just People,"
a piece choreographed by USC student Shannon
Collars. The third jazz piece, "Broadway, Big Band,
Barbecue," is a rapid, foot-tapping melody that blends
jazz and tap dance forms. The piece is choreographed
by Cindy Rack, USC tap teacher, and Carolina Pullard,
a local dance teacher.
A modern ballet solo choreographed by USC dance
professor Melody Schaper will also be included in the
concert. USC student Angie Hauser will perform the
piece, entitled "For Angie."
The concert is sponsored by the USC Department
of Theatre, Speech and Dance. Tickets are available at
the Longstreet Theatre box office and are $9 for the
public, $8 for faculty, staff, military personnel and senior
citizens, and $5 for students. Call 777-2551 or
777-2552 to order. Performances begin each night at 8
p.m.
