use rese receive f From Staff Reports USC research on the pituitary gland got a financial boost when two USC Medical School researchers received a five-year, $871,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health, their latest in a string of NTT-T omntc that nnw tn years of continuous funding. Dr. Charles Blake, chairman of the department of anatomy, cell biology and neurosciences; and Dr. Gary Campbell, a professor in the department, began their collaboration on research of the pituitary gland at the Nebraska Medical School prior to coming to USC in 1986. Their research focuses on the pituitary gland and its interaction with the brain and the ovaries to control the female reproductive cycle. "It's not exactly unprecedented, but it's certainly very unusual to get funding for this long on a research project, particularly when you consider how competitive NIH funding has become," Blake said. In their studies, Blake and Campbell have charted intricate chemical functions of the brain and its control of the pituitary gland and have studied other factors that affect the pituitary function and development. In addition, the researchers have studied the effects of nicotine, stress and light cycles on pituitary function and development. Postdoctoral research associates Dr. Ronald Steigerwalt and Dr. Michael Woller, along with senior research technician Martha Steele, currently are working with Blake and Campbell to study the effects of a recently discovered neurochemical, called neuropeptide Y, on the pituitary and reproductive function.
