State rolled up 304 yards on the ground alone against USC. The intangibles in this game are incredible. One of the most storied rivalries in the country, a lot of point spreads and statistics can be thrown out Emotion alone could carry either team to a win, although USC might need emotion and great play. Clemson is on the way to the Citrus Bowl, USC to the off season and final exams. The 18 Ernestine Kimbrough, said a restraining order was placed on Turner to keep him away from Shriver. Newton and Hardin did, however, admit to knowing that Turner and Shriver had two children. One child died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in 1990. The other is three-and-a-half months old. Newton read from a prepared statement saying the only knowledge he had of Turner's problems came from Turner's high school . "We learned nothing in our background work which indicated to us that something like last Thursday night would occur," Newton said. Newton's assistant, Hardin, began to cry when he read from a statement "The incident involving Carlos Turner was and continues to be a shock to me," Hardin said. Hardin claimed to have spent time with Turner and Shriver, but did not know of any restraining order. "My perception of the relationship between Carlos and Nicole was that it was relatively normal for teenagers given the environment in which they grew up," he said. Newton also said the university has no immediate plans to take Turner off its list of recruits. "There is great concern for Carlos. We're thinking whether he would fit into our program, but it would be most unfair to remove him from that list," Newton said. Newton hinted that Turner's problems may have started after use kicks amidst coi By AARON SHEININ Sports Editor In the middle of controversy, the Steve Newton era begins in Gamecock basketball Saturday. The Gamecocks open the regular hoop season, their first as a member of the SEC, tomorrow night at 7:30 at home against Southern Illinois-Ed wards ville. Newton begins his first season as head coach at USC just a week after one of his recruits was ar cused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend. Newton came to USC after a successful six-year stint as head coach at Murray State. Newton brings four returning starters into the SEC. Guards Jo Jo English and Barry Manning, along with forward Joe Rhett and center Jeff Roulston. Sophomore Jamie Watson starts at guard to complete the starting rotation. The 1990-91 season started well then crashed and burned. After winning 18 of their first 23 games, the Gamecocks dropped eight of their last 10. USC finished the season 20-13, seventh in the Metro Conference. After beating teams like North Carolina, Houston and Temple, USC didn't win a single Metro game after Feb. 6. The season ended March 19 with a NTT loss to Sienna. English led the Gamecocks in scoring this past season, averaging 15 points per game. He also averaged 3.3 rebounds. English will be looked (xi to offer USC a threat from three-point land as well as a threat to (hive the lane. English will also be offer a defensive presence. His 42 steals this past seaBrooks ends atop USC re By JOHN ERIC REESE Staff Writer Gamecock football teams of the past have been blessed with good receiving talent This year's team is no different The Sporting News ranked the 1991 Gamecock receiving corp as the eighth hest in th<*. nation This ranking is greatly due to the play of senior Robert Brooks. Brooks, a three year starter, has made his way into the USC record books. With his two touchdowns this past week against North Carolina, Brooks broke Sterling Sharpe's record for career touchdown receptions, with his 17 th and 18th. In 1988, Brooks set the school freshman record for receptions in a season with 34, and the freshman mark for receptions in a game with eight He has led the team in receiving three years in a row for a total of 2,114 yards. His only 383 yards shy of Sharpe's record. Brooks was also part of the longest play from scrimmage in USC history. history Turner signed his letter of intent to play at USC. Turner's mother and Shriver woe not present with Turner when he signed Wednesday, Newton said. In his statement, Newton claimed Turner was academically "moving in the right direction with progress." x aiiuaic mgn acnooi oincials also said Turner had missed almost 20 days of school this year. However, Newton called him a "marginal student-athlete." Newton, who pledged to build his program with "quality studentathletes," when hired this summer, maintained that 40 percent of the top 50 high school recruits fall into a marginal rating. Another Newton recruit may be in trouble, as well. Percy Eberhart, a high school basketball star from Athens, Ga., has not taken the SAT and had to miss some of this past season because of academic ineligiblity. Newton also claimed Eberhart was not a poor student-athlete, but he is a marginal student-athlete. ; off hoops ltroversy son, second on the team, proves he can play defense. Having shown pro-scouts that he is capable of making the big play, Brooks has become a sought-after player in the upcoming NFL draft. Pro teams are looking for players who can be an asset in more than one position, and Brooks, an Ail-American candidate, has proven he can play more than receiver. For his career, he averages 13.8 varrls nichina 8 1 vardc j e, -v turning punts, and 23.2 yards per kickoff return. Brooks, a retailing major, went to high school at Greenwood High, where he was a two-year starter at tailback. Brooks was voted team MVP his senior season, and was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl, an annual competition between the best high school players from North and South Carolina. He was voted all-state, region and area during his high school career, and was highly recruited by colleges. to succeed in the SEC. Although his 12.6 points per game in 1990-91 exceeded his career average, it was more than a point-anda-half lower than the year before. Manning could break the 1,000 - point mark within the first two games of the season; he now stands at 987. Manning also led the Gamecocks in assists, with 3.9 each game. In the front court, Rhett will carry most of the rebounding. He led USC in rebounds this past two seasons. In 1990-91, he pulled down an average of 6.9 per game, while scoring 12.6. Watson handles the other forward spot, his first season as a starter. Watson averaged 20 minutes a game this past season, \ most of it off the bench. He did start in five contests in 1990-91. As a backup, he averaged 6 points, z.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. In the middle is 7-foot, 265 lb. Jeff Roulston. Rouslton will have the pleasure of trying to defend the likes of Shaquille O'Neal of LSU later this season. This past year, he gave USC 93 points per game and was second in rebounds with 6.7. The top candidates for minutes off the bench this season are forwards Chris Leso and Troy McKoy, along with guard Bojan Popovic. Leso will also see time subbing for Roulston. ; his career cord books In 1988, quarterback Todd Ellis I 1 ' - T? -
