Sure, I was a cool 7-year-old. At
east the longhairs in my mother's
;tudy hall class thought so. They
vould draw pictures of Gene Simnons
sticking his tongue out for
Tie and stuff, the whole nine yards.
I attended two concerts that
^ear, both at the Greenville Memorial
Auditorium. One was the
nfamous Kiss when they still wore
makeup and truly were the gods of
hunder. The other was the awenspiring
Village People.
I haven't really thought too
much about either of those groups
>ince then. Kiss sort of mellowed,
lost their theatrics and dropped
into a sea of bad rock groups. The
Village People wallowed in obscurity
after "In The Navy" fell
from die charts.
Last year, I heard the Village
People were making a comeback
tour. They played Charleston but I
couldn't make it
Friday, the same was true when
the Masquerade,,a nifty Atlanta
club, welcomed the "macho men"
to a Disco Explosion dance party
complete with a groovy dress up
contest and all.
Step over Redd Kross, The Village
People are here to stay. Who
said disco was dead?
Speaking of disco, every Monday
evening the fabulous 40 Watt
Club located in scenic Athens,
GA., holds a disco night instead of
the normal band thing. A few
weeks ago, I was lucky enough to
be there when some 500 folks
piled in the door to support the Chundred
film company's Direct Effect
public service announcement
campaign.
O.K., so what was so special about
this particular night? Well, perhaps

C-hundred is the film company
that Michael Stipe of R.E.M. is involved
with. The group put out the
Tourfilm video of the 1988 Green
tour. The Direct Effect campaign
is an attempt to produce public
service spots for organizations and
causes which can't afford to produce
them themselves.

B.L. Roosters this Thursday night.
Hootie and the Blowfish and
B.L. Roosters will be sponsoring
the second annual benefit for the
Carolina Childrens Center. All proceeds
from the show will go to
support the center which helps
children in broken families.
Sharing the bill with Hootie will
be the Charleston group Uncle
Mingo and Columbia's very own
Public Ayes. The cover is only $5.
