Not good, that is, if you are a Braves fan. Two days after coming off the biggest high of the season, \T?v/\n xT/oo ene. Nixon, who was leading the National League'in stolen bases with 72, will be sorely missed by the Braves. However, the story is much more than that. Nixon, who was expected to make a statement Thursday, has fallen victim to a plague that victimized mankind worldwide. Whatever the personal impact, the issue remains that Atlanta will have to compensate ./or the lack of speejl,. # t The absence of said speed was already evident. In Wednesday's game in San Diego, Lonnie Smith, who assumed the lead-off duties, opened the game with a base hit. After Smith stole second (perhaps trying to nip such worries), Jeff Treadway also hit a single. Smith, who has lost some speed 1 J 1-. - J in recent years, couiu umy au*vance to third. With Nixon,1 that's an automaitc run. Also of note, the general managers for both teams participated in a conference call with commissioner Fay Vincent recently to decide whose home turf a tie-breaker game would be played if needed. Fred Claire and John Schuerholz tossed a coin via high technology and the Dodger's Clair won. So, if the season ends up in a tie, the Braves and the hated-Dodgers will play a onegame tie breaker in Los Angeles, the City of Bums, to decide who gets the pennant. A last bit of Braves info is a trivia question. Who is the only Brave who played in Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta? One of the newest student organizations on campus is the Student Gamecock Club. Headed up by Mike Bosarghe, an intern with the Gamecock Gub? the junior organization is open to any student, including graduate students. For a $20 initiation fee, all interested persons will receive a Student Gamecock Club T-shirt, a membership card, car decal and a subscription to Spurs and Feathers. Members will help with the Athletic Department, be a part of Gamecock Madness with the basketball team, and volunteer to help out in other ways. The club will also allow members a chance to meet and work with the head coaches and attend pizza parties before games, as well as being able to attend closed practices. Bosarghe, who has headed up this tyfae of club at Southern k Miss, said, "They don't have nearly the pride in their athletic department as we have here. The whole idea is to educate the importance of being good, supportive alumni." Trivia Answer: Third baseman Eddie Matthews played for the Braves in all three cities. ^ g Book Bags? ? L.L.
