Atlanta outfielder Otis s Nixon has played a major role C in the Braves' pennant drive 1; this season. Unfortunately, his tl cocaine relapse may prove to have a bigger impact on the \ team's title chances than his 1 .297 batting average and major L league-leading 72 stolen bases. \ Most importantly, Nixon's tl 60-day suspension leaves the E Braves without a true leadoff 0 hitter. Lonnie Smith, once a s great leaaon man, no longer possesses the necessary speed to i be effective^ on the basepaths. r Interestingly, Nixon also failed v a drug test in July, but was not 2 disciplined by baseball Com- 5 missioner Fay Vincent because j of "marginal results." s ... An additional three games have been q/IHpH fr\ thic cpHaHiiIp. Now the meeting of the minds will have a rigorous 15 game schedule to choose from. The results from this past week varied from the amazing to the ugly. In the latter, Teddy Lepp hit the big money, going 10-2 to move into second place. Gordon Mantler remained steady and stays in first. Dave Bowden also had an impressive week at 8-4 and remained in a tie for third with Rich Taylor who lost his hold on second. Aaron Sheinin and Tige Watts are still in the hunt and tied for fourth at 24-14. Watts, moving up in the ranks, deals still going on i91 Diamond Back and t bikes! In last place, again, as usual, is Brant "Pele" Long. Long, who is only four games over .500, said, "I feel like a one-legged man at a butt-kicking contest." This week an even tougher list faces the boys. The Gamecocks are one-point underdogs at home against Virginia Tech, but everyone (save Terry Chick) picked the Cocks to prevail. Watts stands alone as the only picker to take Arizona State in Los Angeles against Southern Cal. Likewise, Penn State was a unanimous choice to rebound and defeat Brigham Young at home. Lepp was the lone player to take West Virginia on the road against Maryland. On the pro scene, only three players dared to pick the Falcons at home versus the Raiders. Watts and Patrick Villegas are the only ones to take the Vikings, and no one thinks the Rams can beat the 49ers.
