The evening's biggest victory, however, belonged to the Richardson Sports group that is campaigning to bring an NFL franchise to the Carolinas. A supportive Williams-Brice Stadium crowd of 69,117 did nothing to hurt Charlotte's chances of landing one of two expansion teams scheduled to begin play in 1993. The Jets opened the scoring with 5:57 remaining in the first quarter on a 15-yard Ken O'Brien to A1 Toon touchdown pass. Pat Leahy's point after gave the Jets a 7-0 lead. The 70-yard drive began after Redskins running back Earnest Byner was stopped cold on fourth down and inches at the Jets' 30. Redskins cornerback Martin Mayhew was flagged for pass interference on the Jets' scoring march, and was burned repeatedly by Toon and fellow Jet receiver Rob Moore during the course of the game. Not surprisingly, it was Mayhew whom Toon easily outmanuevered on his TD catch. The Redskins' next possession aided with quarterback Mark Ryaien being intercepted by Jets defensive tackle Bill Pickel. After aking over on their own 37, the lets moved to the Redskin 29-yard tine. The Jets tacked on another Leahy field goal as the half ended, this time from 25 yards out The kick gave the Jets a 13-0 lead and culminated a 10-play, 82-yard drive. The second half saw the two teams combine for nine punts on their first nine possessions. The third quarter was an ugly string of poor drives that gave the punting units for both teams plenty of exercise. The Redskins finally put together an organized attack with 8:23 left in the fourth quarter. Back-up QB Cary Conklin looked good on the drive, going 5-5 as he led his team 80 yards. The effort was rewarded with a touchdown pass from Conklin to tight end Jimmy Johnson with 4:38 to go in the game. With the score 13-7, the Jets' offense unraveled. Running back Johnny Hector gained three yards on 2 plays. Facing third-and-7, highly-touted rookie quarterback Browning Nagle fumbled deep in the Jets' own territory. Washington linebacker Andre Collins recovered the fumble on the Jets' 13-yard line. However, the 'Skins squandered the opportunity. Conklin completed a 12-yard pass to Johnson, only to then trip for a loss of three yards, throw two incompletions in the end zone and fumble on fourth down on the Jets' 5-yard line. ;ues trudge "Is It October Yet" Mets. Montreal has become the whipping boys of the Senior Circuit. Even baby-faced Houston poses a threat, but Montreal might as well quit playing. And what kind of nickname is Expo anyway?
