Columnist ci By GIL MARTIN Staff Writer The major league baseball season is just over the half-way mark and, as usual, there are surprises galore. Some good, some bad. And also, a few constants. ' Cal Ripken, Jr., Orioles. The new Iron Horse has returned from the dead. Barely hitting .220 at this time last year, the Baltimore shortstop is leading the American League in both batting average and hits and is near the top in most other offensive catagories. Too bad the anemic club for which he plays will rob him of a legitimate shot at the triple crown. Tom Glavine, Braves. So far this season, Glavine has been the best pitcher in all of baseball. And despite a near incredible 1.92 ERA, his 13-4 record would be 16-1 if the Braves' bats had shown up in three of his four losses. Jack McDowell, White Sox. This pitcher/ budding rock star is emerging as a mound stalwart His 11-4 record and 3.20 ERA are definately eyebrow-raising numbers. Newton comes to the Gamecocks after six successful years as head coach at Murray State (Ky.) University, where his teams advanced to postseason play in each of the last four years. Newton, 50, recorded a 116-64 i . record in his six years as head H coach of the Racers, including a 24-9 slate in 1990-91. His 1988 squad advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating N.C. State before falling 61-58 to eventual national champion Kansas in the second round. Harold Baines, A's. Very quietly putting together a great season. Hitting .321 with 12 homers and 60 RBI. True, Big Joe has always been an RBI man (more than any other big leaguer the nast 5 vearsY hut his .301 average is a surmise. Obvi r J / ? o r ously, his change of scenery did him right. Andy Van Slyke, Pirates. This man is hardly earning his keep as the 4th highest paid player in baseball. A .241 average with 9 homers and 48 RBI does not a superstar make. Darryl Strawberry, Dodgers. The Straw has done nothing. It's true that he's been hurt, but even when healthy this overpaid and overrated jerk (his "born-again" status notwithstanding) has been nonexistent Even though capable of getting hot enough to carry a team for a week or so, he's never been able to do it over the course of an entire season.
