NBA draft By RICH TAYLOR 4?Ports Editor J| Tonight's NBA draft will propel a substantial number of former college stars into the millionaire tax bracket Expectations run high for all of these young players, but only time will reveal who can or can't "play". What follows is a listing of potential first round draft picks and my opinion of their respective merits, or lack of. The players are mentioned in the approximate order of their awsA-uuii. Larry Johnson, UNLV. Forget about all ^the talk that he is too short at just over 6-foot-5 ^ play power forward. This guy comes to play EVERY night and will be an immediate impact player in the league. Billy Owens, Syracuse. Tremendous allaround skills, but don't believe this crap about how he can play every position, excluding center. No way Owens can play the point in the NBA. Still, will be a superstar in time. Kenny Anderson, Georgia Tech. The most overrated player since J.R. Reid. Sure, Anderson is an immensely talented point guard who, at times, has dominated college games. But just as often, Anderson has hurt his team by forcing things offensively, while playing less "O" than anyone this side of Loyola Marynt. It amazes me that he is referred to as a in a lifetime player. He couldn't carry Jordan's, Chamberlain's, or Magic's jock, not even on his best day. Dikembe Mutombo, Georgetown. Very good defensively and on the glass. Limited offensive skills prevent him from being a "franchise" player. Unlike many others, I'm not ex- I tremely optimistic about his potential to blossom into a great offensive player. But hey, the 1 guy speaks well over 100 languages fluently, so how can he go wrong? 1 Steve Smith, Michigan State. Underrated offensively, he will be a steal if he lasts past the tenth pick. Stanley Roberts, Lower Richland High/ LSU/Italy/Burger King/Wendy's Super Bar. Great talent, greater appetite. Reportedly weighs over 300 lbs. and counting. Will be a huge risk, but 7-foot-1 talks in the NBA draft. Could become another Benoit Benjamin, if it's indeed possible to be that lazy and undisciplined. Rich King, Nebraska. This 7-foot-2 chump averaged less than six rebounds a game in college.
