George Perez (left), Wil Wheaton, Sean Astin, Keith Coogan and school. 'Toy Soldiers' r By ERIC GLENN Staff Writer _ What nappens wnen Die tiara meets the (Joonies7 You would probably get a film like Toy Soldiers. Terrorists have taken over the Regis School (nicknamed the "Rejects School" by its students) in order to gain the release of a drug czar who was captured by the federal government and taken to the United States to stand trial. The drug czar's crazed son Luis, played by Andrew Divoff, leads the seize on the school. The terrorists expect to find the son of the judge presiding over his father's trial at the school. Instead, they find the misfits of the wealthy and powerful, all of whom have been thrown out of other boarding schools. This is a film full of cliches. All the ideas have been done before and just about done to death. The terrorists taking over the building and wiring it to explode sound a little like the ones in Die Hard. There's even a scence in which Sean Austin goes crawling through the air ducts. Russell use their wits to overcome terrorists who seize their ouses audience you have the young band of misfits (sound" a little like The Gooniesl) thrown together to fight back, led by the biggest misfit, who turns out to be a great leader. The funniest thing about this film is the fact that all of this works. The cliches, when thrown together, create something new. Sean Austin and Keith Coogan are both strong characters and funny. The film is full of one liners that have you laughing until the terrorists do something to bring you back to harsh reality. One funny scene has Sean Austin taking intelligence information to the military and running back before he is discovered missing. The comedy of the scene showing his return to school ends suddenly when he is beaten with a metal rod until his back bleeds. All these factors make Toy Soldiers enjoyable. You start to care about what happens to these kids. When the military finally comes in a wipes out the terrorists, you want to cheer. The only thing about this film that doesn't work is Wil Wheaton. He's the one character you get tired of real quick. All in all the film is good. It's even realistic. They actually used military helicopters in some scences.
