Movies 0 y a ,W Video ji ? jj Vault p ii c; By BRIAN SHELTON tl Staff Writer re As a mere freshman, graduation 11 seems like only a dream to me. It's rc a potent dream (almost, but not w quite, as powerful as the one I ^ keep having about Julia Roberts in ^ scuba gear), but a dream just the J* same. &1 For some of you out there, thonoh crraHiiafion ic not a rirpam ,V| but an impending reality. The w years you had ahead of you when nc you started USC have dwindled to ?' days and soon, the degree you've c'; toiled and labored for will be placed in your greedy palms. yc I congratulate each one of you, Vl and since I'm such a damn nice ou :BC A It .Volunteer!: ' * Office of Community * b * Services. The five minutes you spend registering with Selective Service at the post office won't change you. But it will make a difference to your country. So when you turn 18, register with Selective Service. It's quick. It's easy. And it's the law. bring t ;uy, I have decided to do an issue f the "Video Vault" (which, as ou probably lcnow, is a column bout movies on videocassette) ist for you. That's right, this colmn is about movies where people 1 them graduate from college. Let's see, there's ... um . . . orky's 111. Didn't people graduate 1 that one? Yeah, they did beause that's the one where Inga, ie exchange student, took off her )be at the commencement ceretonies and . . . well you know the st. Actually, though, that movie asn't about college graduates but iffh school araHnat<?c ( O- VVTV/t* lough the actors in this movie ap;ar to be in their mid-30's), so I jess this doesn't count Darn it Most college movies deal with e hilarious hijinx students have hile attending universities and in >ne of them do you ever see any them graduate or even attend isses. I guess I'll just review a w of these and maybe, one day, )u guys will pop them in your CR's and wax philisophically abit your own college experiences. % Delta Zi Announces the 1 V Charlene Beach H Jv^vW Holley Bohner AvvJ Diane Fink avB Rhonda Groseclose Kristen Josephsen ^SM Donna Kitchens yj Julie Lawerence Congratulate ' We will miss y ^ J< Yahoo. We' glad you'i tack coll Revenge of the Nerds{1984): For those of you graduating Gamecocks who were geeks in college, this is the movie for you. Lewis (Robert Carridine) and Gilbert (Anthony Edwards) lead a pack of nerds and, despite taunts from the athletic Alpha Betas, they gain self-respect and even popularity. This is original and funny but some of the characters aren't developed and seem like stereotyped nerds or jocks. Musical competition, where the nerds do an ultrafunky rap, raises the movie a letter grade. (B-) Soul Man (1986): Unbelievable, lighthearted comedy about a white guy who masquerades as a black to get a scholarship to Harvard. This is occasionally offensive but its heart is in the right place and it tries really hard to show that a person cannot or should not try to be something they aren't. Not even to get into Harvard. (B) Back to School (1986): Rodney Dangerfield plays Thorton Melon, a rich businessman who decides to ?A ~~ii t- * i iu i^uncgc wiui ins son. ruiyisn ta Sorority^; 991 Fall Pledge Class jLs?) This is how college is meant to be in my opinion. Dangerfield is great and the movie easily overcomes its thin premise to prove quite enjoyable. (A) Flatliners (1990): How's this for college hijinx? Five medical students (including the scuba gear clad babe I mentioned in the introduction) literally make themselves die to see what Heaven is like. Kinda makes hanging out at Five Points on the weekend seem tame, doesn't it? I didn't really buy the storyline and I thought their versions of Heaven were weak but the suspense, especially toward the end, is great. (C) Spring Break (1983): Four guys get drunk, have hangovers and CI CONGRATULATK {f- THANK YOU FOI U OVER THE PA? GOOD I UNIVERSITY <AL RUSSEI ? d 4J "? This movie is stupid, humorless and typical teen fare and I imagine you'd have a lot more fun thinking back on your own depraved experiences during Spring Break. (D) St. Elmo's Fire (1985): What do you know? There is a movie where people in it graduate from college. I forgot about this one and you will too, minutes after you see it Actually it's not that bad but I hope none of you who are graduat ing end up like the characters in this flick. Please, I beg of you, don't spend the majority of your young adulthood wallowing in self-importance and complaining about how bad your life is.
